Chapter 9 - The Lines We Draw

Chiến dịch 24

Three months later, the snow began to fall over Chicago, dusting the iron bridges and turning the city into a quiet study in monochrome.

The opening night of the Carter-Vane Gallery—Emily had reclaimed her grandmother’s maiden name—was packed with patrons, local artists, and curious socialites. The gallery was warm, filled with soft jazz, golden light, and the gentle clinking of wine glasses.

Emily moved through the crowd in an elegant, simple black velvet dress. She was radiant. The hollow circles under her eyes were gone; her laughter was effortless, drawing people toward her naturally.

Across the room, standing quietly near a large oil painting of a storm over Lake Michigan, was Alexander.

He hadn't brought armed guards inside. Marco waited in the black car parked at the curb. Alexander wore a dark suit without a tie, blending into the artistic crowd with an understated, magnetic elegance. He didn't hover. He didn't control. He simply watched her flourish, an anchor in the corner of the room.

When the last of the patrons finally drifted out into the snowy night, Emily locked the front glass door and turned off the overhead spotlights, leaving only the soft sconces burning along the brick walls.

She walked back to where Alexander stood, holding two glasses of vintage red wine.

“You stayed the whole night,” she said, handing him a glass.

“I wanted to see if the investment was truly as terrible as I predicted,” he said, raising his glass in a quiet toast.

“And?”

“You sold seven pieces,” Alexander said, taking a sip. “The Tribune’s art critic spent twenty minutes admiring the centerpiece. I may have to revise my financial models.”

Emily laughed, a sound that made Alexander’s eyes crinkle at the corners. She leaned back against the counter, looking at him thoughtfully.

“You’ve been very respectful of my space, Alexander,” she said softly. “You haven't pushed. You haven't demanded anything.”

“I told you,” Alexander replied, stepping closer until the clean scent of his sandalwood cologne enveloped her. “I don't collect assets. And I don't cage wild things.”

Emily set her glass down on the counter. Her heart fluttered, not with the sickening panic of her past, but with a sharp, thrilling anticipation.

She reached out and took his hand, lacing her fingers through his. His grip was firm, warm, and unshakable.

“I spent three years being told what I was worth by a coward,” Emily said, looking directly into his eyes. “I know what I want now.”

“What do you want, Emily?” Alexander asked, his voice dropping to a near-whisper.

“I want a partner who knows how to fight,” she said softly. “And I want a man who knows when to let me lead.”

Alexander looked down at their joined hands, then brought her fingers to his lips, kissing the inside of her wrist with a quiet, reverent intensity.

“Then that is what you’ll have,” he said.
