Chapter 6 - The Architect’s Price

Chiến dịch 25

The café on Elm Street was nearly empty at two in the afternoon. Rain had begun to fall over Greenwich, tapping against the wide plate-glass windows and blurring the boutique storefronts across the street.

I sat in a corner booth near the back exit, my coat buttoned tightly over my stomach. Outside, Eleanor’s black Lincoln was parked across the street, with two private security guards standing discreetly near the café’s entrance. Eleanor had refused to let me go alone, but she had agreed to remain in the car so Sienna wouldn't run.

A bell chimed above the door.

Sienna Vale walked in. She wasn't wearing the glamorous silk dress or the radiant smile from the Harbor Club photograph. She wore an oversized black trench coat, dark sunglasses, and a silk scarf pulled tight over her hair. Her hands were shoved deep into her pockets, and she looked nervously around the room before spotting me.

She walked quickly to the booth and slid onto the vinyl bench across from me. When she removed her sunglasses, I saw that her eyes were red-rimmed and surrounded by dark circles. The arrogance was completely gone. She looked terrified.

"You brought security," Sienna whispered, glancing out the window at the Lincoln.

"Did you think I would come alone after what you did?" I kept my voice low, but every syllable was laced with ice. "You helped my husband steal two point four million dollars from his family, you posted a picture designed to humiliate me on the day of my anatomy scan, and now you want to play the informant?"

Sienna flinched, but she didn't deny it. She reached into her leather shoulder bag and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, placing it on the table between our coffee cups.

"I didn't post that photo to humiliate you, Clara," Sienna said, her voice trembling slightly. "I posted it because it was the only way to blow this up before he executed the final phase."

I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "'Some men know where they truly belong.' You called that blowing it up?"

"Grant was supposed to wire the remaining five million dollars to Apex Global yesterday morning," Sienna said, leaning forward. "He told me that once the money cleared, we were flying to Zurich together, that he was leaving you, and that we would start our own firm. But three days ago, I found a secondary set of files on his private server. He wasn't planning on taking me to Zurich. He was setting me up to take the entire criminal fall for the Vantage Maritime leak."

I stared at her, the pieces beginning to rearrange themselves in my mind.

"Explain," I demanded.

"Grant used my agency's credentials to download the valuation models," Sienna said, tears welling in her eyes. "He made sure every digital footprint pointed to my IP address, my email, and my offshore entity. If Whitmore Holdings discovered the leak, Grant was going to play the betrayed executive—claiming that his young, opportunistic branding consultant had seduced him, stolen confidential files, and sold them to Vantage. He was going to hand me over to the Department of Justice while he walked away with eighty million dollars from the merger!"

"And what does that have to do with my baby?" I asked, my voice rising despite my efforts to keep it quiet.

Sienna pushed the flash drive closer to my hand. "Open it. It contains audio recordings from his meetings with Dr. Arthur Bell, dated from June. Grant didn't just pay Bell fifty thousand dollars to forge psychiatric evaluations, Clara. He hired a private medical transport company in New Jersey. They have a contract signed by Grant to pick you up from Greenwich Hospital four hours after you give birth."

A cold, suffocating dread closed around my throat. "Pick me up?"

"The contract classifies you as a 'voluntary psychiatric transfer' due to severe postpartum psychosis," Sienna whispered. "They were going to sedate you in the recovery room, transport you to a private sanitarium in the Adirondacks that doesn't permit unmonitored visitors, and have Grant appointed as your temporary legal conservator. Once he had conservatorship over you, he would automatically have sole legal custody of the child. And with the child in his custody, Eleanor's trust covenants trigger automatically."

I pressed my hand against my mouth to keep from screaming. The horror of it was so monstrous, so completely sociopathic, that my mind struggled to accept it. Grant hadn't just strayed. He had planned an abduction. He had designed a corporate strategy that required erasing me from existence.

"Why are you giving this to me?" I whispered, staring at the flash drive. "Why not go to the police?"

"Because if Grant goes to the federal prosecutor first, his lawyers will bury me before I can speak," Sienna said, her voice breaking. "He has thirty million dollars in personal liquidity and three top-tier defense firms on retainer. I don't have that kind of protection. But Eleanor does. And you do. If Eleanor uses these files to destroy Grant in court, the narrative changes. I become a whistleblower who cooperated with the family, not the mastermind who stole corporate data."

She looked at me, her face pale and desperate. "I know you hate me. You have every right to. I thought Grant was brilliant, and I let him use me. But I am not a monster, Clara. I won't let him lock you away in an institution."

I looked at the silver drive resting on the table. My son shifted inside me, a gentle, innocent flutter against my palm. He had no idea how close he had come to being stolen away into the dark.

"Is everything on this drive?" I asked.

"Everything," Sienna said. "The bank receipts, the forged psychiatric files, the contract with the transport company, and the audio recordings of Grant detailing the exact timeline. Even the emails between Grant and Julian Sterling at Vantage Maritime."

I reached out and closed my fingers around the flash drive. The metal felt cold against my skin.

"What do you want, Sienna?"

"Immunity," she said simply. "Tell Eleanor that if her legal team protects me from corporate prosecution regarding the Apex Global funds, I will testify in family court tomorrow morning. I will stand in front of the judge and tell them every single word Grant said."

Before I could answer, the café door swung open with a violent chime.

May you like

Two men in dark suits stepped inside. They didn't look like patrons. Their eyes scanned the room instantly, locking onto our booth.

Sienna’s face drained of what little color remained. "Oh God," she whispered, grabbing her bag. "Grant’s security. He tracked my car."
