Chapter 20 - The Bloodline Protocol

"What kind of breach?" Nathan barked, stepping directly in front of the camera.
"Richard Bradley," Hayes replied, her voice trembling slightly. "He was being transferred from the Alexandria detention center to a federal courthouse in Manhattan for his arraignment. Twenty minutes ago, his transport was intercepted on the George Washington Bridge."
"Did Vanguard Shield break him out?" I asked, my instincts taking over even as my heart shattered into dust.
"No," Hayes said, looking sick to her stomach. "They didn't break him out. They executed him. Three suppressed rounds through the rear glass. The escort marshals weren't even touched. The shooter left a physical token on Bradley's chest."
"What token?" Arthur asked, standing up from the table despite the agony in his side.
Hayes brought an image up on the shared screen.
It was a silver pendant—an antique locket shaped like a closed rose. I knew it instantly. It was the locket my mother had worn around her neck every day of her life, the one she had supposedly requested to be buried with her at Arlington National Cemetery.
"The shooter left a digital transmission on the FBI emergency channel," Hayes said. "Audio only. Addressed directly to Task Force Obsidian."
"Play it," I commanded, my voice turning to pure ice.
A static-heavy audio file played through the chalet's speakers. A woman's voice, smooth, composed, and chillingly familiar, filled the room:
*"Good morning, Claire. You did exceptional work dismantling your stepfather's pathetic domestic syndicate. Richard was always too crude, too loud, and entirely too greedy to understand the true purpose of the Directorate. He served his purpose, and now he has been retired."*
The voice paused, a faint, elegant chuckle echoing through the speaker.
*"You inherited your father's tactical brilliance and my patience, sweetheart. You think you won this war by taking Richard's stars and burning the convoy in Bavaria. But the Aegis Directorate doesn't belong to the Pentagon. It belongs to our family. The vault in Zurich opens in forty-eight hours, and only our shared biometric key can unlock the final phase. Come to Switzerland, Claire. Let's finish your education."*
The audio cut out with a sharp click.
Nathan stared at the speakers, his skin completely white. "That's... that's impossible. Evelyn Bradley was cremated. I attended the service. We scattered her ashes over the Chesapeake Bay!"
Arthur stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the empty screen, his hand resting on his sidearm. "It wasn't Evelyn, Nathan."
I looked at my father, the horror rising in my throat like bile. "Then who was it?"
Arthur looked at me, his face drawn with the deepest terror I had ever seen in a veteran soldier's eyes.
May you like
"You have a twin sister, Claire," Arthur whispered. "Born twenty minutes after you in that military hospital in Panama. The daughter your mother told me was stillborn."
Outside the chalet, the distant drone of an approaching rotor blade broke through the mountain silence. Nathan drew his weapon, running to the window, while I stood frozen in the center of the room, the blood singing in my veins.
