Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

Chiến dịch 6

At 3:00 p.m., the boardroom on the fortieth floor of Holloway Urban Holdings was packed to capacity.

I attended via an encrypted video link from my hospital bed, wearing a simple silk blouse, my hair pulled back neatly, looking directly into the camera mounted on Rebecca’s laptop.

On the other end of the screen, fifteen board members sat around the massive walnut table. At the far end of the room sat Grant.

He wore a dark blue suit, but it couldn't hide the wreckage of his face. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. His collar was too loose; he had lost weight overnight from sheer terror. His lawyer, a heavy-set man named Harrison, sat beside him with a grim, tight-lipped expression.

“Thank you for joining us, Mrs. Holloway,” Arthur said from the head of the table. “We have an emergency resolution before the board regarding the restructuring of the executive committee.”

“This meeting is illegal!” Grant shouted, leaning toward the conference microphone. “Claire is using corporate mechanisms to wage a domestic dispute! This board has an obligation to the shareholders, not to my wife’s personal vendetta!”

“Mr. Holloway,” Arthur interrupted calmly, adjusting his glasses. “The board’s obligation is to the survival of this corporation. As of noon today, three major institutional lenders have issued notices of default based on the unauthorized commingling of funds discovered in the preliminary audit.”

“I can fix that!” Grant insisted, sweat glistening on his temples. “Give me forty-eight hours. I have relationships with private lenders in London—”

“The private lenders in London will not touch a company under federal scrutiny, Grant,” I spoke through the screen.

My voice came through the boardroom speakers clear, calm, and resonant.

Grant flinched as if I were in the room, his eyes darting toward the television screen where my face was displayed.

“Harrison has the documents,” Rebecca stated from beside me, her voice cutting through the tension. “A complete forensic trail of Aegis Development. Wire transfers, signature cards, and sworn affidavits from Ms. Celeste Ward confirming that Mr. Holloway directed the creation of fraudulent subcontracts using corporate collateral.”

Harrison didn't even look at Grant. He simply placed a heavy hand on his client’s arm, leaning in to whisper something in his ear.

I saw Grant’s face collapse.

The defiance, the bluster, the hollow confidence that had carried him through Manhattan society for ten years died right there in the fluorescent light of the boardroom.

“The proposal is as follows,” Arthur announced, looking around the table. “Grant Holloway resigns immediately as Chairman and CEO. He surrenders all voting shares to Vanguard Heritage Holdings in exchange for the indemnification of corporate debts and Vanguard’s agreement not to refer the audit findings to the Department of Justice.”

“You’re stripping me of everything,” Grant choked out, his voice cracking into the microphone. “Ten years. I spent ten years building this firm!”

“You spent ten years standing on my father’s shoulders and calling yourself tall,” I answered through the screen. “Sign the papers, Grant. Or spend the next five years explaining Aegis Development to a federal judge.”

Silence stretched across the room, thick and suffocating.

One by one, the board members looked away from Grant. Men who had laughed at his jokes, accepted his private jet invitations, and toasted his genius at charity galas looked down at their polished wood table, unwilling to meet his gaze.

Grant looked at Harrison. Harrison slowly, grimly shook his head.

With trembling fingers, Grant picked up the pen.
