Chapter 5 - The Line is Drawn

Rafe Kums stepped out from the shadow of the juniper trees, a heavy Colt revolver held loosely in his right hand. A malicious, confident grin split his weathered face as he looked down at Emmett and Odessa kneeling by the open trench. Behind him, two other Ironwood riders materialized, their rifles leveled squarely at the clearing.

“Well now,” Kums said, walking forward and kicking a clod of dirt toward the lockbox. “Looks like the dead are doing a lot of talking tonight. The Colonel said you two would come sniffing around this creek eventually. You always were too curious for your own good, Doyle.”

Emmett stayed frozen in a half-crouch, his hand resting millimeters from his grip. He calculated the distance, the angle of the moonlight, the position of the riders—and realized the harsh truth: they were outmatched and outpositioned.

Unless Odessa had a card left to play.

Kums sneered, shifting his gaze to the massive woman beside Emmett. “And you, Mrs. Kesler. Running around in the dark like a ghost. You should’ve stayed up at the ranch house and minded your chickens. When the bank forecloses next week, you’d have had to leave anyway.”

Odessa slowly rose to her feet.

In the dim moonlight, her height seemed almost unnatural, towering over Kums by nearly a foot. The grief that had flickered in her eyes a moment ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, terrifying fury. She didn't reach for her shotgun, which still lay across her saddle ten yards away. She simply looked at Kums the way a butcher looks at a lamb before the drop.

“You killed my husband over a ledger, Rafe,” Odessa said, her voice carrying a calm, rhythmic resonance that made the foreman’s grin falter.

“Your husband fell off his horse, widow,” Kums spat, raising his revolver slightly. “Ask the sheriff. It’s on the paper.”

“The sheriff won't be signing any more papers after tomorrow morning,” Odessa replied. She didn't blink. She didn't flinch.

Before Kums could process the warning, a sudden commotion erupted from the trail behind the Ironwood riders.

“Hey! Drop those guns!”

A sharp, youthful voice cracked through the darkness—Toby, perched on a high ridge above the trail, had not stayed hidden as ordered. Instead, he had climbed the limestone shelf and was now rolling heavy boulders down the steep embankment directly toward the trail horses.

The startled horses shrieked, rearing and kicking in the dark, throwing the two backup riders into a chaotic scramble to control their mounts.

Kums cursed, his attention snapping away from Emmett for a single, critical second as he yelled at his men to hold their animals.

That single second was all Emmett needed.

He didn't draw his gun to shoot; he lunged forward with the speed of a striking timber wolf, slamming his shoulder directly into Kums’s chest. The foreman went flying backward, his pistol discharging harmlessly into the dirt as he crashed hard against the limestone outcrop, the breath exploding from his lungs in a ragged gasp.

Emmett pinned him to the earth with a knee to his chest, pressing the barrel of his Colt directly beneath Kums’s chin.

“Move an inch,” Emmett whispered, his voice trembling with a rage he had bottled up for months, “and I’ll send you to hell to explain this ledger to Elias yourself.”

The remaining Ironwood hands, scrambling to quiet their rearing horses and suddenly facing the barrel of Odessa’s shotgun—which she had retrieved with terrifying speed—hesitated, lowered their weapons, and backed into the shadows of the brush.

Kums stared up into Emmett’s eyes, the color draining entirely from his face.

Odessa walked over, standing beside Emmett with the heavy iron lockbox clutched securely in her arms. She looked down at the man who had ruined her life, her voice steady and absolute.

“We’re going back to Kesler Ridge,” Odessa said, her words cutting through the cold night air like a butcher's blade. “And tomorrow morning, this box goes straight to the federal marshal in Cheyenne—not the corrupt sheriff in town. Your boss’s time is up, Rafe.”
