Chapter 5 - The Rider on the Ridge

Caleb’s hand snapped away from the silver chain with the speed of a striking viper. In a single fluid motion, his hunting knife vanished into his sheath, and his right hand closed around the stock of the Winchester leaning against the table.

Clara froze, her breath caught in her throat. Her face drained of color, the temporary warmth of the cabin instantly replaced by the icy dread she had carried across three mountain valleys.

"Caleb?" she whispered, her voice shaking. "Who is out there?"

Caleb didn't answer. He gestured sharply toward the dark corner where Lily was sleeping. Clara scrambled off the bench, scooping the little girl into her arms and pulling her low behind the heavy pine trunk just as a boot heel struck the wooden porch outside.

Thud.

Then came a low, gravelly voice through the heavy oak door.

"Mercer! I know you're in there, you old bastard. Open up. We saw the smoke from the lower ridge."

Caleb’s eyes narrowed. He recognized the voice. It belonged to Tom Vance, one of the bounty trackers from Blackwood who had spent years trying to piece together the wreckage of the old fire, hoping to find a reward or a confession buried in the ash.

"Caleb," Clara mouthed silently from the dark corner, her eyes wide with absolute terror. "If they see me... if they know I'm alive, they'll connect it all. They'll say you hid me, they'll say—"

"Quiet," Caleb commanded in a harsh whisper.

He stepped toward the door, checking the lever of the Winchester with his thumb. The chamber was loaded. He had hunted meat that morning; he hadn't expected to hunt men tonight.

"I'm warning you, Mercer," Vance's voice called out again, louder now, accompanied by the scrape of a rifle butt against the clapboards. "We got word from the stage station that a woman and a child headed up this way today. Nobody comes up this trail unless they're hiding from the law or running from a debt. Open the door or we kick it off the hinges."

Caleb reached out, his thick fingers wrapping around the iron latch. He glanced back once toward the corner where Clara crouched with Lily pressed tightly against her chest, the silver chain gleaming faintly in the dying embers of the fire.

The seven-year ghost story was over. The mountain was about to find out who lived in the dark.

Caleb threw the door wide open.
