Chapter 8 - The Line Drawn in Fairplay

The midday sun beat down on the dusty main street of Fairplay as Marshal Thomas Vance, Elias Hart, and Clara walked purposefully toward the swinging wooden doors of the Miners’ Rest Saloon.

Clara’s boots hit the boardwalk with a firm, rhythmic sound. Every step felt like a reclamation of ground she had lost years ago in the stifling parlors of Saint Louis and the lonely campsites across the Kansas plains. Her ribs still throbbed, and her left wrist ached beneath its cedar splint, but the trembling in her hands was gone, replaced by a cold, steady resolve.

Elias walked slightly to her left, his massive frame a silent, unyielding wall of protection, yet he made no move to shield her from the view of the townspeople. He treated her not as a fragile victim to be rescued, but as a partner taking back what was hers.

Marshal Vance pushed open the saloon doors, the smell of stale beer, cheap whiskey, and woodsmoke washing over them.

The room was half-empty, the midday clientele consisting of a few weary miners hunched over wooden tables near the back. But sitting at a corner table near the window, nursing a glass of dark amber whiskey, was Wade Bennett.

When the doors swung open and the bright sunlight cut across the dim interior, Wade looked up.

His eyes locked onto Clara first, widening in absolute shock as if he were staring at a ghost dragged straight out of a mountain ravine. Then his gaze shifted to the silver star pinned to Marshal Vance’s vest and the towering, weather-darkened figure of Elias standing directly beside her.

Wade scrambled backward, his chair scraping loudly against the floorboards as he surged to his feet, his right hand instinctively dropping toward the bone-handled revolver holstered at his hip.

"Don't even think about it, Bennett," Marshal Vance called out, his hand hovering inches from his own weapon, his voice cutting through the smoky room like a whip. "The game's over."

"You have no jurisdiction here!" Wade shouted, his voice cracking with panic as the miners at the surrounding tables slowly stood up and backed away toward the walls. "She's my ward! She stole from me, and that old vagrant kidnapped her!"

"She's Sarah Vance’s daughter," Marshal Vance said, walking steadily toward the corner table with the leather ledger held up in his left hand. "And the territorial court in Denver voided your fraudulent guardianship papers three hours ago based on the sworn testimony of her mother’s estate records."

Wade’s face turned a mottled, sickly shade of crimson. He looked wildly around the room, realizing too late that his lies had finally run out of road. His fingers twitched near his revolver.

Before Wade could pull the iron clear of his leather holster, Elias moved with astonishing, terrifying speed. In two long strides, he closed the distance across the room, his massive, scarred hand clamping down over Wade’s wrist with the crushing grip of a vise.

Wade cried out in pain as the bones in his forearm ground together, his fingers instantly going limp. The revolver slipped from his grasp, clattering harmlessly onto the wooden floorboards.

Elias twisted Wade’s arm behind his back with effortless control, shoving him face-first down against the scarred surface of the wooden table.

"You should've stayed on the trail, mister," Elias muttered into Wade's ear, his voice low and dangerous.

Marshal Vance stepped up beside them, snapping a pair of heavy iron handcuffs around Wade’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click. "Wade Bennett, you're under arrest for extortion, theft of estate property, and assault with intent to kill."

Clara stopped two paces away, looking down at the man who had terrorized her mother and tried to destroy her life. He looked smaller now—no longer the towering, terrifying jailer of her nightmares, but a petty, cornered criminal stripped of his borrowed power.

"You'll never see a dime of that money, Wade," Clara said quietly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent saloon. "And my name is Clara Vance."
