Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Pass

The narrow mountain pass opened into a high alpine basin surrounded by towering granite walls. The wind howled through the gap, biting cold and smelling of coming snow. They moved in single file, Silas taking the point, Sayen watching their flanks, and Thomas keeping pace in the center.

Suddenly, Silas raised a fist, signaling a hard stop.

He dropped to one knee behind a cluster of boulders, motioning for Sayen and Thomas to duck out of sight. A hundred yards ahead, where the pass narrowed into a rocky bottleneck, three figures sat motionless on horseback. Their mounts stood patiently against the biting wind, but the men themselves were alert, scanning the trail with binoculars.

Bounty hunters, or syndicate enforcers. There was no mistaking the gray coats and civilian rifles.

"They're blocking the pass," Silas whispered, looking back at Sayen. "It's the only way through without losing three days climbing the northern ridge."

Sayen crawled forward beside him, her dark eyes narrowing as she assessed the distance and the cover. "There are three of them. Two are watching the trail, but the third is tending to a pack horse near the rock wall. They haven't seen us yet because of the rise."

"If we try to sneak past them in the open, they'll spot us before we clear the basin," Silas muttered, his hand resting on his rifle. "We have to neutralize the bottleneck."

Thomas shrank back against the rock face, clutching his coat. "Mercer, there are three of them with repeating rifles. We're outgunned."

"Not if we use the terrain," Sayen said, her voice completely calm, devoid of panic. The fear that had once paralyzed her in Bitter Creek was entirely gone, replaced by the cool, calculating focus of someone fighting for her life and her future. "Silas, you take the left ridge above the trail. Draw their attention. When they look up to find you, I'll move through the gully on the right and position myself behind the rock wall."

Silas looked at her, a mixture of fierce pride and deep concern in his eyes. "That puts you right in their line of sight if something goes wrong."

"Nothing's going to go wrong," Sayen said quietly, placing her hand briefly over his. "We finish this together, remember?"

Without waiting for further debate, Silas slipped away toward the steep shale slope on the left, moving with the silent grace of a mountain cat. Sayen waited a full minute, letting Silas reach his vantage point, before she began moving stealthily through the dry brush on the right, keeping low against the earth.

A sharp crack of a rifle shot broke the silence from the left ridge.

A puff of dust exploded inches from the lead enforcer's horse. "Ambush! Left ridge!" the man shouted, wheeling his mount around and drawing his weapon as he and his companion scrambled for cover behind the boulders.

The third man, distracted by the sudden gunfire from above, turned his horse toward the left slope—straight toward the blind spot where Sayen had just emerged from the gully.
