Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Wolf

Before Hannah could speak, the heavy steel door of Sub-Basement 3 flew open, banging loudly against the concrete wall.
Ethan Whitmore strode into the room, flanked by two towering plainclothes security guards. Within seconds, the guards had Gary pinned against the metal desk, stripping his tool belt and wrench away, forcing his wrists behind his back in heavy zip-ties.
"Who owns Apex Crest, Henderson?" Ethan demanded, his voice echoing off the concrete walls like thunder.
Gary grimaced against the cold metal desktop, spitting onto the floor. "Ask your precious board of directors, Whitmore. Ask the one who approved the emergency quorum on Christmas Eve. Arthur thought he was using her to get rid of you—turned out she was using both of us to take the whole empire."
Ethan’s face went rigid. The blood seemed to drain from his expression. "Marlene."
Hannah looked at Ethan, the pieces falling together in an instant.
Marlene Vance-Sterling—no relation to Hannah, but the longest-serving member of the Whitmore Foundation board, Marcus Whitmore’s former confidante, and the woman who had dramatically supported Ethan’s motion to arrest Arthur during the emergency quorum.
"She orchestrated Arthur’s downfall," Hannah said, breath coming fast. "Marlene didn't help you on Christmas Eve to save you, Ethan. She helped you take down Arthur because Arthur was getting sloppy and threatening to expose the shell network. By putting Arthur in prison, she eliminated the only person who knew she was the true beneficiary of Apex Crest."
Gary laughed, a wet, choking sound from the desk. "She’s upstairs right now presenting an emergency financing bridge to the executive committee. Since four point two million went missing this morning, she’s claiming Ethan mismanaged the transition. She’s buying out the trust’s distressed debt before the market opens tomorrow."
Ethan turned to his security leads. "Take Henderson to the holding suite on Sub-Level 1. Strip him of all communication devices and keep him under armed watch until the marshals take custody."
"Yes, Mr. Whitmore." The guards hauled Gary to his feet and marched him out through the heavy steel door.
Ethan turned back to the workstation. His breathing was rapid, his fists clutched at his sides. "Marlene sat at my father's dinner table every Thanksgiving for fifteen years. She was the one who held my mother's hand at his funeral."
"She’s counting on the fact that you have no proof connecting her to Apex Crest," Hannah said, pulling the black external SSD from the terminal. "Arthur’s name was on the surface shell corporations. But Gary was downloading the final cryptographic key right here."
She plugged the drive into her own laptop on the desk, running an immediate extraction script. Lines of encrypted registry keys unspooled across the screen, resolving into a digital identity certificate.
"The ultimate beneficial owner," Hannah read aloud, her eyes widening. "Registered under a Panama holding trust: *M. Vance-Sterling*. The final execution signature requires a physical security token—the one she carries on her key chain."
"She’s in the executive boardroom right now with the finance committee," Ethan said, checking his watch. "The meeting started fifteen minutes ago. If she gets them to vote on the debt-equity conversion, the board will sign over the voting control before we can freeze the accounts."

Hannah shut her laptop with an authoritative snap, tucked it under her arm, and looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"Then let's go crash another board meeting," she said.
