Chapter 17 - The Art of the Trap

The thirty-second floor was hushed in solemn tension. Outside the frosted glass doors of the boardroom, four senior partners from the foundation's primary investment bank waited with briefcases, looking anxious.
Inside, Marlene’s voice drifted through the gap in the double doors—smooth, measured, laden with sorrowful authority.
"...and while none of us wanted to believe Arthur’s corruption ran so deep, this morning's unexplainable four-million-dollar capital drain proves the company’s internal controls are broken under Ethan’s sole stewardship. The foundation cannot survive an SEC investigation if our capital reserves fall below regulatory thresholds. Apex Crest has offered an immediate forty-million-dollar liquidity injection in exchange for a temporary realignment of voting shares."
Ethan pushed the double doors open without knocking.
The doors swung back with a sharp thud that resonated across the polished boardroom.
The seven committee members turned in unison. Marlene sat at the head of the long conference table, her pearl necklace gleaming under the chandelier, an elegant fountain pen poised over a leather-bound agreement.
When she saw Ethan, her expression shifted effortlessly into one of motherly concern. "Ethan, darling. We were just discussing the emergency liquidity bridge. I tried calling your office, but your assistant said you were unavailable."
"I was in Sub-Basement 3," Ethan said, walking slowly down the center of the room.
Marlene’s pen paused imperceptibly above the paper, her eyes hardening for a fraction of a second before the warm mask settled back in place. "Sub-Basement 3? Whatever for?"
"Interviewing Gary Henderson," Hannah announced, stepping into the room directly behind Ethan, setting her forensic laptop down on the glossy surface of the conference table.
Several board members gasped.
Marlene’s gaze snapped to Hannah. The grandmotherly warmth vanished completely, replaced by an icy, aristocratic disdain. "Ethan, why is this... this newly appointed auditor interrupting a confidential fiduciary vote? Hannah Vance has barely been reinstated."
"Because Miss Vance just recovered the primary authentication server for Apex Crest Holdings," Ethan said calmly, resting his palms on the table across from Marlene. "The very company you are asking this committee to hand our family’s voting shares to."
A low murmur broke out among the committee members.
"That's absurd," Marlene said, offering a tight, patronizing laugh to the surrounding executives. "Apex Crest is an international consortium. I merely brokered the rescue package through my European banking contacts to save this foundation from bankruptcy."
"Then you won't mind if Miss Vance displays the ultimate beneficiary certificate on the main presentation screen," Ethan replied smoothly.
Hannah didn't wait for permission. She connected her laptop to the room's display system. With a double-click, the massive 85-inch monitor on the wall illuminated with the Panama registry documents, the transfer logs from 4:00 AM, and the digital fingerprint linking the wire authorization directly to Marlene's private foundation token.
"Every wire transfer executed under the ghost protocol required three keys," Hannah explained, her voice carrying clear and steady across the silent room. "Arthur provided the CFO credential. Gary Henderson provided the hardware terminal access. But the authorizing beneficiary signature belonged to Panama Entity 992-B—wholly owned by Marlene Vance-Sterling."
Marlene sat perfectly still. The pearl necklace seemed to tighten around her throat.

"This is a fabricated forgery," Marlene said, though her voice lacked its earlier resonance. "Just like the records she forged seven years ago."
"Seven years ago, you had Arthur frame me to cover your initial capital theft," Hannah countered, stepping forward until she stood just three feet from the woman who had ruined her twenties. "You used my code, my name, and my background to hide forty million dollars of systematic embezzlement. But this time, Mrs. Sterling, the log files were retrieved from an air-gapped server that hasn't been connected to the internet since noon. And Gary Henderson has already signed a sworn confession on Sub-Level 1."
