Chapter 1 - The Descent of the Crown

The heavy wool of Jason’s designer suit seemed to suddenly contract, tightening around his throat like a noose as the two security guards flanked him on either side. The mall’s general manager, a man whose tailored demeanor usually radiated corporate hospitality, looked at Jason not with respect, but with the cold, calculated detachment one reserves for a common trespasser.
“Mr. Miller, I’m afraid I must ask you to step away from the display case,” the manager said, his voice carrying clearly over the hushed whispers of the boutique crowd. “We’ve just received an administrative hold on all commercial leasing agreements associated with your corporate entities. Effective immediately, your accounts with this establishment are suspended.”
Lily stepped back another foot, her manicured hand flying to her mouth, her eyes darting between Jason and the security guards as if she were suddenly seeing a ghost. The five-carat diamond on its platinum pedestal suddenly looked less like a prize and more like an anchor dragging her down into a very deep, very cold ocean.
“Suspended?” Jason’s voice cracked, the high-pitched panic breaking through his carefully manufactured veneer of elite confidence. He pointed a trembling finger at me, his face flushing a mottled, furious purple. “This is a mistake! She’s doing this! She’s an unstable ex-wife running a petty revenge scheme! Call the corporate office—I am a managing partner of Vanguard Capital!”
I didn't flinch. I let my gaze drop slowly from his terrified eyes down to the pathetic stack of declined credit cards still scattered across the glass counter.
“Vanguard Capital was registered under a sole proprietorship, Jason,” I said softly, stepping close enough to catch the frantic scent of his expensive cologne mixed with cold sweat. “And the sole proprietor has always been me. You were an employee with a fancy title and an expense account. An employee who just got fired.”

The manager nodded curtly, gesturing to the guards. “Sir, we can escort you out through the main concourse, or we can involve local law enforcement for disturbing the peace. The choice is yours.”
Jason opened his mouth to protest, to threaten, to scream—but the words died in his throat. He looked at Lily, whose expression of wide-eyed adoration had completely curdled into pure, unadulterated disgust. Without another word, Jason snatched his rejected cards off the glass, turned on his heel, and bolted toward the exit, his expensive shoes squeaking frantically against the polished marble floor as he fled into the afternoon crowd.
