Chapter 2 - The Aftermath of the Glass Castle

The boutique fell into an eerie, suffocating silence once the heavy glass doors swung shut behind Jason. The associate who had attempted to swipe the Centurion card was staring down at her terminal as if it might bite her, while the manager offered me a tight, sympathetic nod before retreating into his back office to handle the inventory reset.
Lily stood alone by the display case, her shoulders trembling under her designer coat. The illusion had shattered entirely, leaving behind only the cold, hard reality of a gold-digger whose primary asset had just turned out to be hollow plastic.
“You’re Sophia,” Lily whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant hum of the mall’s HVAC system. She didn't look at me; her eyes remained fixed on the five-carat diamond that now seemed impossibly far away.
“I am,” I replied calmly, adjusting the lapel of my coat.
“He... he told me you were just a passive housewife,” she muttered, a bitter, self-deprecating laugh escaping her lips. “He said you spent your days in the suburbs while he built the empire. He told me the divorce settlement was going to clear out your accounts and leave you begging.”
“Jason was always a visionary when it came to fiction,” I said, stepping past her toward the exit. “Too bad his grasp of reality was always so profoundly weak. If you’re smart, Lily, you’ll walk out that side door and never look back. Because men like Jason don’t just fall alone—they pull everyone within arm's reach down into the dirt with them.”
I didn't wait for her response. I pushed open the glass doors and walked out into the open air of the plaza, letting the crisp autumn wind hit my face. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It wasn't an alert from my bank this time, but a secure notification from my lead corporate counsel, David Vance.

“Asset freeze on Vanguard Capital is complete. All secondary shell companies have been successfully isolated. Are you ready for the next phase?”
I unlocked my phone, tapped out a single word response—*Proceed*—and slid the device back into my pocket. The divorce papers were signed, Jason’s financial life had been systematically dismantled in less than five minutes, and his mistress had received a masterclass in deception. But the empire Jason thought he had stolen from me was only the outermost layer. The real battle for my father’s legacy was just beginning.
