Chapter 1 - The Frame of the Lens

The hotel room was small, lit only by the amber glow of a single bedside lamp and the pale light spilling through the cracked blinds from the Minneapolis street below. Daisy was finally sleeping, her tiny chest rising and falling in a slow, rhythmic cadence, though her small hand remained clamped tightly around my index finger as if she were terrified I might vanish while she closed her eyes.

I carefully pulled out my phone and tapped the app icon for the hidden camera.

The device, disguised as an innocuous black plastic cube nestled between two heavy volumes on the living room bookshelf, had been forgotten since the brief period we employed a nanny two years ago. I hadn't even checked it when Mitchell and I moved into his parents’ sprawling suburban apartment to save money while he transitioned roles in his engineering firm.

The screen flickered, loading data from the cloud storage. A progress bar crawled across the glass like a dying insect.

12%... 45%... 89%... 100%.

The live archive popped up, organized by date. I skipped backward through the week, past the days I was away in Kansas City, until I landed on the exact afternoon three days prior—the day Beatrice claimed her precious gold bracelet had vanished.

The video feed snapped into crisp, wide-angle clarity. The living room looked normal, bathed in the gray afternoon sun filtering through the balcony doors.

Then the front door clicked open.

It wasn't Daisy. It wasn't me, or Mitchell, or even Beatrice.

Brenda walked into frame, her designer handbag slung over one shoulder, scrolling frantically through her phone. She tossed her keys onto the coffee table, kicked off her shoes, and stopped dead in her tracks when she heard the heavy footsteps of Beatrice approaching from the kitchen.

Panic flashed across Brenda's face. She didn't head for her bedroom. Instead, she darted straight toward Beatrice’s master bedroom door down the hall.

My breath caught in my throat.

Less than two minutes later, Brenda emerged, her fist clenched tight. When she opened her palm under the living room light, the gold heirloom bracelet glinted maliciously against her skin. She didn't hide it in a drawer or try to slip it into Daisy’s room. She marched straight over to the tall bookshelf where the camera was hidden, reached up, and dropped the heavy gold chain directly into Daisy’s small, blue plastic toy backpack sitting on the bottom shelf.

Then she smiled, grabbed her coat, and walked out the door just as Beatrice entered the room a moment later.

May you like

The screen froze on Brenda’s smug, triumphant grin.
