Chapter 7 - The Ledger’s Price

The Cadillac’s engine idled quietly in the basement garage, casting a low, warm hum against the damp concrete walls.

We had moved the boys into the reinforced panic room behind the wine cellar—a secure space my father had built during the territory wars of the nineties, stocked with water, filtered air, and old comic books Elena had managed to scavenge from the upper study. Mateo had fallen asleep with his head resting on Mateo’s small shoulder, completely exhausted by the strange, violent world that had suddenly broken into his quiet life.

Upstairs, in the main study, Marcus and I stood over the mahogany desk where Eleanor Vance had left her manila folder.

"She’s bluffing about the immediate decay," Marcus said, scrolling through the decrypted PDF files on his tablet that Vincent had managed to siphon from the Vanguard’s local proxy server. "The cellular degradation isn't an active failsafe set to detonate today. It’s a slow-acting genetic marker designed to force compliance over years. They wanted you panicked, Alejandro. They wanted you to hand the boys over out of fear."

I poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, swirling the liquor without drinking. The amber light caught the edges of Sofia’s portrait above the fireplace.

"She didn't just lie about the timeline," I said quietly, my eyes fixed on the painted smile of my dead wife. "She knew about Sofia’s secret correspondence with the medical board six months before the car crash. That part wasn't a bluff. Sofia was talking to them, Marcus. She was trying to buy the boys' freedom before they were even born."

Marcus leaned against the bookshelves, his arms crossed over his tactical vest. "People do desperate things when they're cornered by monsters, boss. You know that better than anyone. You've made deals with judges, senators, and syndicate bosses just to keep Moretti Enterprises breathing."

"This wasn't a business deal," I said, setting the glass down hard enough to crack the ice inside. "This was a cage. And Sofia walked right into it so I could keep playing king of Chicago."

My phone buzzed on the desk. It was an encrypted text from Vincent.

“The financial dump is primed, Alejandro. We have forty-two shell companies, offshore accounts in the Caymans, and real estate holdings across three continents linked directly to Eleanor Vance and the Vanguard board. One tap of my screen, and their entire financial foundation goes up in smoke. But they’ve countered. They’ve frozen every legitimate Moretti bank account in the Midwest. Payroll, logistics, dock operations—everything is locked.”

I stared at the screen. The Vanguard hadn't just attacked my home; they had cut off the oxygen supply to my entire empire. Without liquid capital, my men wouldn't work, my ports would stall, and the rival syndicates on the South Side would smell blood in the water within forty-eight hours.

"They want a war of attrition," I murmured, running a hand over my face. "They think without money, I’m just a man with a gun."

"What do we do, boss?" Marcus asked. "Do we push the button? Do we dump the ledgers?"

"No," I said, a cold, sharp clarity settling over my thoughts. "If we dump the ledgers publicly, the feds step in, freeze every asset permanently, and seize the boys as wards of the state under federal protective custody. Vance wins without firing another shot."

"Then we have to go to them," Marcus said.

I looked up, meeting his steady gaze. "Not to their boardroom, Marcus. To the source. Sofia kept a personal safety deposit box outside of Zurich—not a corporate Vanguard account, but a private one she opened before we were married, under her maiden name."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "You think she left something there? Something that gives us leverage over Vance?"

"I know she did," I said, grabbing my jacket from the back of the chair. "Because the night before our wedding, she told me she had a contingency plan for the day the past finally caught up with us. Get the jet prepped at O'Hare private aviation. We're flying to Switzerland."
