Chapter 9 - The Zurich Vault

The air inside the Swiss bank’s subterranean vault smelled of old parchment, polished mahogany, and absolute security.

The vault attendant—a stiff, immaculate man with silver-rimmed glasses and a dark wool suit—placed a heavy steel safety deposit box onto the green felt table in front of us, bowed slightly, and retreated behind the reinforced glass partition without a single word.

Marcus stood guard by the heavy steel door of the private viewing room, while I sat alone at the table.

The box was stamped with a simple serial number and Sofia’s maiden name: Sofia Vance-Moretti.

Even her last name in this vault carried the stain of the family she had tried to escape.

I slid the brass key—which I had found taped inside the lining of Sofia’s old leather painting kit back at the estate—into the horizontal lock and turned it. The heavy mechanical tumblers clicked open with a satisfying, resonant thud.

I lifted the lid.

Inside sat a thick leather-bound journal, a stack of certified bank statements from 2018, and a single, sealed manila envelope labeled in Sofia's neat, sloping handwriting: To Alejandro, if you ever read this, the war is already lost.

My chest tightened. I reached in and pulled out the envelope, breaking the wax seal with my thumb.

Inside were three folded sheets of paper and a flash drive. I unfolded the first page and began to read.

“Alejandro, if you are reading this, it means Elena failed to keep them hidden, or you were foolish enough to come looking for answers instead of running. I didn't fake my death to betray you. I faked it because the Vanguard’s board wasn't just targeting your business—they were engineering our children to be the legal heirs to the entire corporate consortium. My father, Richard Vance, wasn't just a politician. He was the founder of the genetic synthesis project that created the cellular regeneration protocol. And he used my DNA—and yours—without our consent.”

The room seemed to spin.

Richard Vance. Eleanor’s brother. The city councilman pushing to seize my docks tomorrow morning.

He wasn't just a corrupt politician enforcing a corporate board's will.

He was Sofia’s father.

My father-in-law—the man who had supposedly died of a heart attack in Switzerland six months before our wedding—hadn't died at all. He was the head of the Vanguard.

I turned the page, my hands trembling as I read further.

“The research was funded by Moretti money, funneled through shell companies your father never knew existed. Richard didn't want to destroy your empire, Alejandro—he wanted to inherit it through our children. The car crash on Lake Shore Drive was his warning to me: either I disappear and let them raise the boys in the facility, or he would detonate a car bomb with you inside it. I chose the crash. I chose to let you hate my memory if it meant you drew another breath.”

I dropped the paper onto the green felt table.

The grief of the last five years—the crushing, suffocating guilt that had defined every waking moment of my life—shattered into a million jagged pieces.

She hadn't run away from me because she didn't love me. She had absorbed every ounce of my agony so I wouldn't have to face the man who created me.

Marcus stepped forward from the door, his face grim as he looked at my expression. "Boss? What’s in the box?"

"It wasn't a corporate conspiracy, Marcus," I whispered, looking up at him with eyes burning with a fury that transcended anything I had ever felt in my life. "It was a family reunion."

Before Marcus could answer, my satellite phone rang on the table.

It was Vincent. I picked it up and pressed accept.

"Alejandro," Vincent’s voice was breathless, panicked. "You need to look at the municipal feed right now. Richard Vance just held an emergency press conference at City Hall. He didn't just push the eminent domain claim on your docks..."

Vincent paused, his breath catching.

May you like

"He just filed a missing persons report for his daughter, Sofia, and claimed that you kidnapped her children."
