Chapter 5 - The Safehouse Ledger

The rain lashed violently against the tinted windows of Gabriel’s black SUV as it cut through the deserted industrial district of downtown Chicago. Inside, the cabin was dead silent except for the rhythmic sweep of the windshield wipers.

Khloe sat in the passenger seat, staring down at the tablet in her lap. The encrypted flash drive Gabriel had given her contained more than just financial records; it held access logs, encrypted comms, and a visitor manifest for a classified federal black site on the city's West Side.

"If Pendleton is alive," Khloe said, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine, "why hasn't he contacted anyone? Why let the feds and the Moretti family tear each other apart over his supposed murder?"

"Because he wasn't hiding from me, Chloe," Gabriel said, keeping his eyes on the wet asphalt ahead. One hand rested casually on the steering wheel, while the other hovered near the center console where a sleek Beretta rested in a custom holster. "He was hiding with them. Julian and Pendleton were partners in a federal conspiracy to hand my shipping ports over to the government in exchange for complete immunity and a new identity."

Khloe turned her head to look at him, the harsh neon lights of passing streetlamps casting sharp shadows across his angular face. "So the federal investigation... the missing logistics CEO... it was all a setup from the very beginning to cripple your empire legally."

"And financially," Gabriel added, glancing sideways at her with a look of intense, quiet respect. "Which is why they needed someone like Julian on the inside to doctor the books and make it look like I pulled the trigger." He pulled the SUV smoothly into the shadows of an abandoned brick warehouse directly across the street from a heavily fortified, nondescript government building. "Which brings us here."

Khloe looked out the window at the building. A single light burned on the second floor. "You're going inside."

"We're going inside," Gabriel corrected, killing the engine. He unbuckled his seatbelt and reached into the glove box, pulling out a heavy, matte-black firearm and checking the magazine with a sharp click.

Khloe’s breath caught in her throat. "Gabriel, wait. I'm an accountant. I trace bad math, I don't storm federal safehouses with a mafia boss!"

Gabriel paused, turning his body toward her. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers wrapping around her trembling hand, stopping her panic instantly. Up close, his stormy eyes were fierce, steady, and completely unyielding.

"You aren't just an accountant anymore, Chloe," Gabriel said, his voice low and hypnotic. "You walked into my VIP section, kissed a man you knew was dangerous, and then dismantled a forty-million-dollar conspiracy in two days. You belong to this world now—under my protection." He leaned in close, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, sending a shiver straight down her spine. "Stay in the car, keep the encrypted tablet connected to the mainframe, and if I don't walk out of that building in twenty minutes... press send on the global archive."

Before Khloe could argue, Gabriel opened the door and stepped out into the pouring rain, vanishing into the darkness toward the safehouse.

Khloe stared at the glowing screen of her tablet, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was alone in the dark, clutching a weapon she didn't know how to use, waiting for a man who lived outside the law. As the clock on the dashboard ticked down the minutes, the screen on her tablet suddenly flashed red, an incoming alert overriding the system—someone had just remotely wiped the database from an unknown terminal inside the building, and the tracking signal on Gabriel’s phone abruptly went dead.
