Chapter 7 - The Price of the Ledger

The rain had stopped by dawn, leaving Chicago coated in a slick, metallic sheen. Inside the top-floor office of Moretti Tower, the morning light did nothing to warm the heavy, suffocating atmosphere.

Khloe sat at her mahogany desk, her eyes bloodshot, staring at the financial records she had spent the entire night cross-referencing. Across from her, Matteo stood silently by the door, while Gabriel paced near the floor-to-ceiling windows, a cold cup of black coffee cooling in his hand.

"The transfer window opens in less than seventy-two hours," Khloe said, her voice raspy from exhaustion. She tapped a line of encrypted code on her screen. "To stop the final sign-off on Monday morning, we don't need Julian's confession. We need the identity of the federal prosecutor who authorized Pendleton's fake safehouse."

Gabriel stopped pacing. He turned to look at her, his expression unreadable. "And to get that name, we have to access the secure DOJ internal server. Which means breaching a federal firewall from a private terminal."

"Which is illegal, highly traceable, and a one-way ticket to federal prison for me," Khloe pointed out, though her fingers hovered steadily over the keyboard. She looked up, meeting his stormy gaze without flinching. "Unless we use Julian's active credentials before the FBI realizes he's been cut off from his prison phone privileges."

Gabriel walked over to her desk, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. The clean scent of his cologne cut through the stale air of the office. "You realize what you're doing, Chloe? You're stepping past the point of no return. Once you hack that firewall, you aren't just my forensic accountant. You're an active participant in a federal war."

Khloe didn't look away. The fear that had paralyzed her in the nightclub days ago had burned away, replaced by something sharper, heavier, and entirely her own. She was tired of being pushed around—tired of Richard Gable treating her like office furniture, tired of Sarah and her shallow friends treating her like a joke, and tired of powerful men assuming she would cower when things got real.

"Let me remind you, Mr. Moretti," Khloe said, her voice steady and cool, "you're the one who bought out my contract and dragged me into this penthouse. If you wanted a timid accountant who stayed in her lane, you should have left me at my cubicle."

A slow, dangerous smile broke across Gabriel's face—not the cold smirk he wore for his enemies, but something raw, genuine, and intensely captivated. He reached out, his warm thumb gently tracing the line of her jawline.

"I never wanted a timid accountant, sweetheart," Gabriel murmured. "I wanted you."

The quiet intimacy in the room was suddenly shattered by the sharp chime of the office intercom.

Matteo stepped forward, his hand dropping to his jacket. "Boss. We have a visitor in the lobby. Unannounced."

Gabriel straightened up, his easy warmth vanishing instantly, replaced by the lethal authority of the crime boss. "Who?"

"Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine Hayes," Matteo replied evenly. "She says she's here to audit our corporate restructuring... and she brought a federal warrant for Chloe's arrest."
