Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth of the Kitchen

The sterile scent of leftover cleaning fluid and old dust hung heavy in the kitchen air, suffocating and cruel. I pressed my palm against Chloe’s forehead, feeling the ragged heat of a fever that had clearly been climbing unchecked for a full day and night. Her small body trembled against my chest, her breathing shallow and raspy.
"Mommy, my tummy hurts," she whimpered, burying her face in the hollow of my neck.
Rage, cold and razor-sharp, flooded my veins, instantly replacing the shock of finding her abandoned. Eighteen years in military medicine had trained me to stay calm under fire, to triage chaos in the most violent environments, but this wasn't a battlefield—this was a betrayal engineered by the man who had promised to guard my child with his life.
I carried her down the stairs, wrapped her tightly in a spare blanket from the hallway linen closet, and settled her onto the living room sofa. A quick check of her vitals confirmed what my fingers had already told me: she was severely dehydrated, running a hundred-and-two-degree fever, and suffering from acute exhaustion.
In the pantry, the shelves were practically bare. A half-empty box of stale crackers and a single jar of expired baby food sat on the very back shelf.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a casual text from George.
Instead, it was a bank notification alert.
The main savings account—the one I had explicitly locked down before deploying to the northern district—had just sustained a massive wire transfer withdrawal of twenty-four thousand dollars. The recipient account was registered under a commercial contractor name: Vance & Co. Salon Renovations.

George hadn't just neglected our daughter. He had systematically emptied our life savings while she starved upstairs, channeling the money directly into his sister Fiona’s commercial nail salon expansion.
