Chapter 6 - The Sound of the Receiver

The ringing tone buzzed once, twice, a sharp mechanical heartbeat cutting through the suffocating tension of the holiday dining room.
Thaddius stared at me, his face devoid of color, his hands twitching at his sides as if he wanted to lunge across the table and physically rip the phone from my ear. But the presence of my father standing tall beside me and Marcus watching with a cold, detached expression froze him in his tracks.
"David," I repeated into the receiver, keeping my voice steady, though my pulse raced against my ribs. "File the petition for dissolution of marriage. And pull up every single financial and mortgage record tied to the estate. We're launching a full forensic audit."
"Right away, Sara," David’s voice came back crisp and professional through the speaker. "Do you want me to loop in the corporate compliance division regarding the fraudulent land collateral?"
"Yes," I said, my eyes locking onto Eleanor, who had sunken back into her chair, looking older and smaller than her tailored suit suggested. "Loop everyone in. Let's make sure the banks and the county registrar have certified copies before the night is over."
I tapped the screen, ending the call. The click of the disconnect echoed like a gavel dropping in a courtroom.
Thaddius staggered backward, his knees hitting his chair, and he collapsed back down into it, burying his face in his hands. "You've ruined us," he muttered, his voice muffled by his palms. "You've destroyed everything."
May you like
"No, Thaddius," I said, slipping my phone back into my evening bag. "I just stopped paying for your lies."
