Chapter 8 - The Morning Audit

The winter sun filtered through the high arched windows of my downtown corporate office, casting sharp geometric shadows across my glass desk.

It was 8:30 a.m. the day after Christmas, but the executive floor was already buzzing with intense, focused energy. My chief financial officer, along with two senior forensic accountants assigned by David’s firm, sat around the conference table surrounded by stacks of financial statements, wire transfer logs, and property deeds.

The door pushed open, and my legal counsel, David Sterling, stepped inside carrying a thick blue binder.

"Good morning, Sara," David said, setting the binder down in front of me. "The preliminary asset freeze went through at midnight. Every personal account, investment portfolio, and secondary line of credit tied to Thaddius has been locked."

I opened the folder, scanning the numbers. The scale of his secret debt was staggering. "How much did he leverage against my company shares?"

"Close to four million dollars," David replied grimly. "He used forged proxy signatures, taking advantage of the marital asset clause you unwisely agreed to when you incorporated three years ago."

I felt a cold flash of anger, but it quickly melted into sharp, calculated resolve. "Can we claw it back?"

"Every last cent," David nodded. "Because the collateral he used to secure those loans—the estate land—was proven to be fraudulent at the moment of signing. The banks are going to come down on him hard for wire fraud and misrepresentation. He's looking at federal indictment, not just a civil divorce."

My phone buzzed on the desk. An incoming call from an unrecognized local number.

I ignored it, letting it ring out to voicemail. A second later, it vibrated again. Then a text message popped up on the screen: Sara, please pick up. The police are here. They're serving papers at the house. I need your help.

I stared at the screen, watching the cursor blink, feeling an eerie sense of absolute detachment.
