Chapter 4 - The Marblehead Return

By seven in the morning, the rain had stopped, leaving the New England coast covered in a heavy, blinding fog.
Elena drove back to the Marblehead estate. The iron gates parted automatically as her father's sedan approached—Dante had never bothered to revoke her vehicle access, assuming she had nowhere else to go.
She parked near the side entrance. The house was dead silent.
She let herself in with her brass key. The hallway smelled of fresh coffee and cedarwood. She walked down the long corridor toward Dante’s study, the manila envelope clutched tightly in her hand.
The study door was open.
Dante wasn't sitting at his desk. He was standing by the tall window, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his shoulders tense as he stared out at the foggy Atlantic.
He looked exhausted. There were dark circles beneath his steel-gray eyes, and a half-empty glass of whiskey sat untouched on the mahogany table.
When he heard her footsteps, he spun around.
For a second, relief flashed across his face—so raw and unguarded that it caught Elena off guard. But it vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, defensive mask he wore for the outside world.
"Where were you?" Dante demanded, his voice low and sharp. "Do you have any idea what kind of people operate out there? You left your phone in the car."
"I was talking to Leo Vance," Elena said calmly, walking into the room and placing the manila envelope on his desk.
Dante stared at the envelope. He didn't touch it.
"Leo has nothing to do with this," Dante said tightly.
"He told me about the seal, Dante. He told me about the forged customs declarations."
Dante’s jaw tightened. "You shouldn't have gone to him."
"Why? Because he knows the truth?" Elena stepped closer, her voice steady despite the exhaustion pulling at her bones. "You've been meeting with Bianca not because you're having an affair, but because she's using these falsified manifests to blackmail you. She wants the waterfront terminals."
Dante looked at his wife, his expression unreadable.
"You think you understand everything because you found a file," he said quietly.
"Then tell me I'm wrong."
Dante walked slowly around the desk, stopping just inches from her. He reached out as if to touch her cheek, then let his hand drop back to his side.

"You're not wrong about Bianca," Dante said softly. "But you're entirely wrong about why she has the leverage."
