Chapter 5 - The Unseen Signature

Elena held her ground, refusing to shrink back from the cold intensity in his eyes.

"What does that mean?" she asked.

"Bianca isn't blackmailing me with fake manifests, Elena," Dante said, his voice barely above a whisper. "She's blackmailing me with real ones. Documents bearing my actual signature—signed three years ago, before we were married, when I partnered with her father to clear those docks of illegal cargo to pay off my brother's gambling debts."

Elena's breath hitched. "You said you left that life behind before we met."

"I tried," Dante said. "I thought I had buried it. But Bianca kept the original receipts. She didn't forge the new ones—she just used my old signature template to make it look like I'm still running contraband today."

"And if the feds see the old ones?"

"Then everything I've built, everything I've protected, including this home and our child's future, disappears overnight," Dante said. "That's why I couldn't tell you. Not because I didn't trust your mind, Elena—because I couldn't bear the thought of you looking at me like an accessory to crimes I committed before I even knew you."

The silence in the study stretched heavy and suffocating.

Elena looked at the man she had married, realizing the terrible symmetry of their situation. She had believed herself imprisoned by his suspicion, while he had been imprisoned by his past.

Before she could answer, her phone—which she had left on the corner of the desk—lit up with a text message from an unknown number.

She glanced down at the screen.

A single photograph appeared.

It showed Marcus Thorne standing outside Leo Vance’s apartment building, holding a second manila envelope labeled Moretti Family Trust.

Below the image was a text:

Tell Dante his wife has good taste in friends. We'll be collecting the eastern terminal deed by midnight, or Leo loses his shop.

Elena looked up at Dante.

The color had drained entirely from his face.
