Chapter 32 - The Brother’s Claim

"Vance Keaton?" I turned toward Luke, the name hitting me like an electric shock. "Vance hasn't set foot in Tennessee in fifteen years. Harrison bought him out of the oil leases back in 2009."

"He flew in from Houston two hours ago," Luke said, handing me the fresh court filing. "The hospital notary signed off on Harrison’s signature at six this morning. The ink isn't even dry. They’re executing an emergency liquidation of all Keaton Family Trust assets to pay off creditors and dissolve the corporate partnership before the Texas mineral audits go public."

I looked down at the court summons. Vance Keaton was petitioning for immediate physical possession of Tract Forty-Two, citing an abandoned agricultural partnership agreement dating back to 1979.

"They're trying to bulldoze the entrance to Cavern Four before anyone can verify the subterranean boundaries," Luke continued, his eyes darting between me and Corinne. "If they seal that shaft with concrete, the state survey can’t prove the illegal runoff came from Keaton drills. It all falls on you, Grant. Your signature is on the original excavation permits from last November."

"Not if this deed is registered first," Corinne said, pointing to the yellowed document I held.

Luke stared at her, then down at the paper. "What is that?"

"Clara’s reservation of trust," Corinne said. "Signed in 1984. It conveys the surface and subsurface rights of Tract Forty-Two directly into the Williamson County Conservation Sanctuary. It precedes Harrison's agricultural filing by five years."

Luke let out a dry, incredulous laugh. "Corinne, an unrecorded deed from forty years ago is toilet paper in probate court unless the named executor has standing to assert it against the living patriarch."

"I have standing," Corinne said calmly.

Luke blinked. "On what grounds?"

"Turn the page, Luke," I said quietly.

Luke took the paper, his eyes scanning the faded blue legal stamp. I watched the blood drain from his face in real time. He looked from the document to Corinne, his mouth opening, then shutting again.

"You're..." Luke stammered, stepping back. "You're Clara's child. Harrison’s oldest."

"Which means under Tennessee probate law, section thirty-one, Vance Keaton’s power of attorney is secondary to a direct descendant's claim on ancestral land held under an unliquidated trust," Corinne said. "Harrison knew this. That’s why he spent forty years trying to buy every acre surrounding Franklin Road. He was terrified Clara had left a paper trail that would strip the foundation right out from under his empire."

"There's just one problem," Luke whispered, his voice trembling as he looked down at the bottom margin of the page. "Harrison didn't act alone when he locked Clara out. Look at the witness signature on the 1984 conveyance, Corinne."

I leaned over Luke's shoulder.

Beneath Clara's handwriting and the notary seal was a third name, signed in bold, sharp cursive that made my stomach drop into a bottomless pit.
