Chapter 36 - The Broken Seal

Twenty minutes in Judge Miller’s private chambers stripped Vance Keaton of every legal weapon he thought he possessed.

Faced with a certified state surveyor's journal and an unrecorded deed with a direct descendant asserting sanctuary protection, Miller knew that signing Vance’s emergency injunction would mean committing career suicide. The Tennessee Board of Judicial Conduct would have his license before the sun went down.

"The injunction is denied," Miller said, rubbing his temples behind his massive cherry desk. "Tract Forty-Two is placed under temporary judicial freeze pending a full evidentiary hearing on the validity of the Clara Keaton sanctuary trust. No equipment, no concrete trucks, and no corporate personnel are permitted within five hundred yards of Cavern Four."

Vance Keaton stood up, trembling with suppressed rage. He glared at Corinne, his fingers clenching into fists at his sides.

"You think you’ve won something, girl?" Vance hissed, leaning across the table. "You think you're honoring your mother? Clara died spitting blood in a state-run sanitarium while Harrison lived in a six-million-dollar mansion on the hill. You’re just like her. You’ve got her pride, and you’re going to end up with her grave."

"My mother died with her soul intact, Vance," Corinne replied, not blinking. "Which is something no one with the name Keaton can say. Now get out of our way before I have the bailiff arrest you for trespassing on sanctuary grounds."

Vance sneered, adjusted his jacket, and stormed out of the chambers, his flock of attorneys scrambling behind him like scattered quail.

When the heavy door clicked shut, only Luke, Corinne, and I remained in the hallway.

"The freeze gives us seventy-two hours," Luke said, checking his phone. "That's how long before Vance’s appellate team files in Nashville to overturn Miller’s stay. We need physical proof from inside Cavern Four before they find a friendly appellate judge."

"The water samples," I said. "And the original drill heads. If we document the lateral bores before they can tamper with them, the state environmental protection agency takes jurisdiction away from the county entirely."

"We can't go down there alone," Luke warned. "Harrison had private security guarding the quarry entrance."

"They cleared out the second the court clerk issued the freeze notice," Corinne said, looking at a security notification on her tablet. "My remote cameras show the perimeter trucks pulling back toward the main highway. They know the liability is too high."

"Then we go now," I said.

We drove back to Franklin Road under an overcast midday sky. The air felt charged, heavy with the metallic tang of an approaching storm. We parked Luke’s SUV near the tree line and walked past the rusted warning signs, descending the steep, rocky slope that led to the mouth of Cavern Four.

The entrance was a gaping, jagged maw cut into the limestone ridge. Thick industrial power cables and reinforced rubber ventilation hoses snaked through the mud like dead pythons.

I turned on my high-powered tactical flashlight, the beam cutting through the damp, cold mist that drifted up from the subterranean depths.

"Grant," Corinne said, catching my arm.

Her grip was firm, her eyes searching mine in the shadows of the rock face.

"When I set up the accounts," she said quietly, her voice stripped of all pretense, "when I arranged the forensic audit that trapped you with Caroline... I told myself it was just business. That you were Harrison’s man, and you deserved whatever fell on you."

"I made my own choices, Corinne," I said, meeting her gaze. "I chose to look the other way because Harrison was writing the checks. I chose to betray our vows. You didn't force my hand on any of that."

"I know," she whispered. "But you need to know this: my mother didn't want revenge. She wanted the land kept whole. If we go down there, we finish this Harrison’s way, or Clara’s way. There is no middle ground."

May you like

"We finish it Clara’s way," I said.

We stepped into the mouth of the cavern, the darkness swallowing us whole.
