Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Washington

Maya’s small arms clung around my neck, smelling faintly of airport pretzels and strawberry shampoo. I held her against my chest, feeling the frantic flutter of her heartbeat gradually slowing down to match mine. Over her small shoulder, the room was suspended in complete silence.

Dante hadn’t opened the envelope yet. He held it between his fingers, thumb grazing the raised, embossed seal. It was heavy parchment, bearing the distinct, muted emblem of the United States Department of Justice, Special Financial Crimes Division, routed directly out of Washington, D.C.

Lucas stood with his hands shoved deep into his trench coat pockets. The dark circles under his eyes spoke volumes about the four days he’d spent moving Maya from safe house to safe house across two state lines while Dante and I dismantled Marco Moretti’s splinter faction down at the harbor docks.

"Where did you get this, Lucas?" Dante asked, his voice low and completely stripped of the casual warmth he had displayed only seconds earlier.

"A federal courier handed it to me at the terminal in Philadelphia," Lucas said, shifting his weight. "He didn't ask for identification. He approached us at gate B4, called me by my full legal name, looked at Maya, and said, 'Give this to Elena Vance-Moretti before noon tomorrow, or don't bother coming back to New York.'"

My stomach hollowed out. Not addressed to Dante. Addressed to me.

"Maya, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing her forehead and gently unhooking her hands from my blazer. "Go with Uncle Anthony into the kitchen. He’s going to make you that hot chocolate with the tiny marshmallows you love."

Anthony, standing silently by the entryway with their luggage, caught my eye. He gave a single, understanding nod. "Come on, kiddo. Let's see if the chef left any of those Italian cookies in the pantry."

Maya hesitated, glancing up at Dante with wide, curious eyes. Dante offered her a gentle, reassuring wink—a rare flicker of tenderness that belonged only to this house—and reached out to tap her nose. "Go on, little bird. We'll play cards after dinner."

The moment the kitchen doors swung shut, the air in the foyer curdled.

Dante turned the envelope over and extended it toward me. "It's yours, Elena."

I took it. The paper felt cold against my skin. With steady hands, I broke the wax seal and slid out a single sheet of heavy cream letterhead. My eyes scanned the typed lines, Dante stepping close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his shoulder.

*Notice of Voluntary Deposition and Forensic Production.*

*In re: The Vance-Moretti Restructuring, Cayman-Delaware Liquidity Facilities, and Sovereign Port Holdings.*

*To: Elena Vance-Moretti, Chief Financial Architect.*

*You are hereby requested to present yourself at the Federal Building, 290 Broadway, Manhattan, on Friday at 9:00 AM, accompanied by the cold-storage encryption ledgers designated under Annex 4.*

Beneath the formal summons was a handwritten postscript in blue fountain pen ink:

*Marco Moretti was never the target, Mrs. Moretti. The target was the person clever enough to clean his money without leaving blood on the ledger. You bought your husband's freedom; now let's discuss the price of yours. — Special Agent Marcus Ward.*

Dante snatched the paper from my fingers, his eyes blazing as he absorbed the handwritten note. His jaw clenched so violently that the muscle ticked under his skin.

"Ward," Dante growled, crumpling the edge of the document. "He’s been hunting my father since nineteen ninety-eight. When my father died, he transferred that obsession onto me. But he never had the paperwork. Marco was supposed to be his ticket in."

"He doesn't want Marco," I said, my voice eerily calm despite the tremor in my chest. "He knows Marco was an idiot with a gun and a god complex. Marco wasn't running the multi-billion-dollar logistics operation that moved port freight through New Jersey. I was. Ward knows I built the financial bridge that turned your family's black money into legal corporate equity."

"You did that under duress when you married me to save your father's firm," Dante countered, stepping in front of me, his dark eyes fierce with protective fury. "I signed the restructuring. My signature is on every single front-facing document. I am the CEO of Moretti Holdings. If anyone sits in front of Ward, it’s me."

"Did you read the subpoena, Dante?" I asked quietly, tapping the paper. "He specifically cited *Annex 4*. You don't even know what Annex 4 is."

Dante froze. The silence stretched between us like a drawn bowstring.

Only an hour ago, standing in the middle of our private suite, he had agreed to my terms: *No more secrets. Shoulder to shoulder.* But now, confronted with the reality of what running an empire truly meant, the old mafia boss instinct to lock his wife in an ivory tower was rearing its head.

"Annex 4 was the counter-balance," I explained, looking straight into his eyes. "When your father forced our marriage three years ago to absorb my family's accounting firm, I didn't just build a legitimate shell company for you. I built a hidden escrow fail-safe. If your family ever tried to execute Lucas or eliminate me once the audit was finished, Annex 4 was programmed to release thirty years of Moretti offshore routing data directly to the Department of Justice."

Dante stepped back, staring at me as if seeing me for the first time. "You held a kill switch to my family's throat from the day we said our vows?"

"I was protecting my brother," I replied without flinching. "I didn't love you then, Dante. I didn't know who you were. All I knew was that your father was a monster and you were his heir."

"And when did you disarm it?" he asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

I swallowed hard, the taste of dry copper rising in my throat. "I didn't."

May you like

Dante stared at me, the air between us crackling with sudden betrayal. Before he could speak, Lucas stepped forward from the threshold, his face pale.

"Elena didn't disarm it," Lucas said, his voice shaking slightly. "Because someone already triggered it from the inside twenty-four hours ago."
