Chapter 14 - The Anatomy of a Trap

"How much time do we have?" Dante asked, his operational instincts instantly overriding his personal fury.
He didn't yell. He didn't pace. The moment the battle shifted from a family betrayal to an active ambush, Dante Moretti transformed into the cold, calculated commander who had ruled the city's underbelly for a decade.
"The markets closed twenty minutes ago, but the after-hours automated margin calls are already liquidating our secondary collateral accounts," I said, my fingers flying across the tablet's glass screen. "By sunrise, our credit lines in New York, London, and Tokyo will be frozen. Every legal bank account tied to the Moretti name will be seized by federal receivers."
"And the illegal cash reserves?" Dante looked over at Anthony, who had quietly stepped into the foyer, his eyes hard and vigilant.
"Marco burned half of the New Jersey warehouses during his rebellion," Anthony reported bluntly. "The cash vaults in Queens are untouched, but if the feds have our names on an active grand jury indictment, every highway and toll bridge out of Long Island will have license-plate scanners pinging our vehicles within six hours."
"They aren't trying to arrest us tonight," Christian said, shivering as he leaned against the wall. "Ward told me the grand jury won't issue formal warrants until after Elena's deposition on Friday morning. The freeze on the accounts was just a preemptive restraint to keep the capital from moving overseas."
"Ward lied to you, Christian," I said, looking up from the data streams.
Christian blinked, startled. "What? Ward is a senior federal agent. He gave me his personal word—"
"Ward didn't initiate this freeze," I interrupted, spinning the tablet around so Christian could read the regulatory filing. "Look at the petitioner's signature on the emergency injunction. It’s not Marcus Ward from the Department of Justice. It’s the law firm of *Kaufman, Sterling & Ross*, representing an anonymous institutional creditor."
Dante leaned over my shoulder, reading the name. "Sterling? As in your father's former law partner?"
"Julian Sterling," I answered, the bitter pieces falling into place. "When my father died six months ago, Julian took over the senior partnership. He was the one who handled the Valenti trusts. Christian, you didn't give the files to a noble federal prosecutor. You gave the files to a contact provided to you by someone in your academic circle, didn't you?"
Christian's face went completely bloodless. "I... I spoke to Professor Althaus at Columbia. He introduced me to an attorney who claimed to be a liaison for the federal task force."
"Julian Sterling played you," I said, cold fury sharpening my every nerve. "He used your desire to save the family to get access to Annex 4. With my encryption keys broken, the Valentis don't need to negotiate with us. They used the SEC to freeze our legal defenses, and now they’re using the grand jury threat to force me into that federal building on Friday."
"Why do they want you in that deposition, Elena?" Dante asked, his voice low and tight. "If they already have the keys, what do they need you for?"
"Because Annex 4 has a dead-man's trigger that only I can manually disarm," I explained. "The servers in Zurich are currently in read-only mode. If anyone attempts to seize the underlying forty billion dollars in sovereign bonds without my live biometric authorization at the terminal, the entire network defaults to an irreversible escrow lock for ninety-nine years. The Valentis can't touch a single dollar of their fortune unless I sit in front of that federal magistrate and enter the clearance code."
Dante let out a dark, mirthless laugh. He walked over to the liquor cabinet, poured two fingers of bourbon, and drank it in a single swallow.
"They built a thirty-year corporate empire using my blood and your father's signature," Dante said, setting the glass down with a sharp *clack*. "And now they think they can use a fake federal deposition to hold a gun to my wife's head and force her to hand over forty billion dollars."
He turned back toward us, his dark eyes burning with absolute, uncompromising menace.
"Christian, you’re an idiot. But you’re still my brother. Go into the kitchen, sit with Lucas, and don't make a sound."
Christian nodded silently, completely broken, and retreated down the hallway with his head bowed.
Dante walked across the room until he was standing inches from me. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of my face. The tension between us had shifted from suspicion to an unspoken, ferocious alliance.
"Shoulder to shoulder, right?" he murmured, searching my eyes.
"Shoulder to shoulder," I whispered back. "So what's the play? We don't have forty-eight hours to fight this in court, and we can't shoot our way through the Southern District of New York."
"We don't shoot the government, Elena," Dante said, a slow, predatory smile curling the edges of his mouth. "We invite the real puppet master to the table."
"Julian Sterling?"
"Sterling is just the clerk," Dante said. "I want the man who signed the check that bought your father’s soul. Giancarlo Valenti."
"Valenti hasn't set foot on American soil since 1995," I pointed out. "He operates out of a fortified villa on Lake Como. He’s untouchable."
"He was untouchable," Dante corrected, pulling a secure burner phone from his pocket and dialing a twelve-digit international number. "Until tonight. Because Giancarlo Valenti has one weakness that my father documented before he died."
Dante put the phone to his ear, waiting as it rang three times.
When the line clicked open, Dante spoke in flawless, aristocratic Italian:
"Signor Valenti. This is Dante Moretti. My wife has just rewritten the security parameters on Annex 4. If you want your forty billion dollars before the American stock exchange opens tomorrow morning, you have exactly three hours to board your private jet to Kennedy Airport. Otherwise, by dawn, every euro in your Cayman facility will be donated directly to the United States Treasury."

Dante hung up the phone without waiting for a reply.
He looked at me, his eyes gleaming with dark exhilaration. "Get your laptop, Mrs. Moretti. We have an empire to ransom."
