Chapter 5 - The Locked Library

The air in the library grew suffocatingly heavy.
Dominic didn't flinch, but his body went completely rigid, every muscle coiled for action. He stepped back toward me and Emma, positioning himself protectively between us and the two guards blocking the doorway.
"You brought muscle, Richard?" Dominic said, his voice dangerously low. "You think you can hold me hostage in my own grandfather's study?"
"Not a hostage, Dominic," Richard said, walking over to the fireplace and warming his hands against the unlit stone. He spoke with an unsettling casualness, as if we were discussing a real estate portfolio rather than a kidnapping. "Just a temporary containment. Once the Geneva transfer is finalized at midnight Swiss time, the funds will be safely routed through three different offshore accounts. By tomorrow morning, the necklace will be halfway to Zurich, and you and I will have a very civilized conversation about restructuring the board."
"And what about us?" I asked, my voice shaking as I pulled Emma tight against my side, shielding her eyes from the armed men by the door. "What happens to me and my daughter?"
Richard turned his head, looking at me with cold indifference.
"You and the child will be provided with a generous severance package, Elena," Richard said smoothly. "A substantial sum of money wired to a foreign account, on the strict condition that you take a very permanent vacation to a country with no extradition treaties with the United States. If you cooperate, you live comfortably for the rest of your lives. If you don't..." He let the sentence hang in the air, complete and terrifying in its implication.
Dominic’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth might break.
"You touch them, and I swear to God I will dismantle everything you've ever built, Richard—starting with your freedom," Dominic said, his voice vibrating with a quiet, lethal intensity that made even the two armed guards shift uncomfortably by the door.
Richard gave a dry, humorless chuckle. "You always were too dramatic, Dominic. Just like your father."
He turned to the two guards. "Lock them in the secure archive room behind the map cases. Make sure their phones are left here on the desk. We wouldn't want them trying to play hero before the night is over."
"Don't move," one of the guards said, stepping into the room with his hand resting near his hip.
Dominic looked sideways at me, his eyes flashing with a desperate, calculating urgency. As the guard advanced toward us, Dominic didn't reach for his gun; instead, with blinding speed, he grabbed a heavy brass candlestick off the mahogany desk and hurled it directly at the antique wall sconce above the door.

The heavy brass shattered the glass bulb, plunging the entryway into sudden, absolute darkness.
"Run!" Dominic shouted, grabbing my arm with one hand and scooping Emma up with the other as the room erupted into chaos behind us.
