Chapter 9 - The Incinerator Hall

The air near the estate’s sub-basement incinerator was thick with the acrid scent of burning paper and hot metal.

Dominic and I crouched behind a stack of wooden shipping crates just outside the heavy steel double doors of the furnace room. Through the wired glass window, we could see Richard Vescari standing beside a massive industrial incinerator, tossing thick stacks of leather-bound ledgers into the roaring orange flames.

Anthony stood nearby, his hands trembling as he held a gasoline canister.

"Hurry up, Anthony!" Richard snapped, his aristocratic composure finally fracturing under the immense pressure. "The Geneva wire transfer has ten minutes left to clear. Once the digital routing is complete, every single paper trail in this room needs to be ash!"

"I'm trying!" Anthony stammered, his face pale and slick with sweat. "The binding on these old books is thick—they won't catch fire fast enough."

"Then use more accelerant!"

Outside the heavy iron estate gates down the driveway, the faint wail of distant federal sirens began to echo through the rainy night air.

Richard froze, his head snapping toward the ceiling. "Sirens. How is that possible? The jammers are active!"

"Uncle Richard..." Anthony’s voice cracked with rising panic as he dropped the empty fuel can against the concrete floor. "Look at the security monitors on the wall."

On the closed-circuit screen near the furnace controls, the estate's main security feed showed a convoy of black federal SUVs sweeping past the crushed iron gates, their blue and red strobe lights painting the wet pavement in flashing streaks of light.

"Federal marshals," Richard whispered, color draining entirely from his face. "That's impossible. Unless..."

He turned his head slowly toward the doorway.

Dominic didn't wait for him to finish the thought. He stepped out from behind the shipping crates, the small leather ledger clutched securely in his left hand.

"Unless you underestimated the analog backups, Uncle Richard," Dominic said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the furnace room like a pistol shot.

Richard spun around, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "Dominic. How did you—"

"We took the scenic route," Dominic said coldly.

Anthony panicked, his hand instinctively dropping toward a heavy iron fire poker leaning against the brickwork of the furnace. "You little bitch!" Anthony screamed, lunging directly toward me where I stood near the doorway. "You just had to keep your mouth shut, didn't you? You and your brat—"

Before Anthony could take three steps, Dominic crossed the room with terrifying speed, slamming his fist squarely into Anthony’s jaw.

Anthony let out a sharp cry, stumbling backward and crashing hard into a stack of empty wooden crates, sending them splintering across the floor. He groaned, clutching his face as blood welled from his split lip.

Richard didn't move. He stood frozen beside the roaring furnace flames, looking at his nephew with cold, calculating detachment.

"You're a fool, Dominic," Richard said quietly, smoothing the lapels of his navy blazer as the heavy iron doors at the end of the sub-basement hallway burst open with a deafening crash.

"Federal Marshals! Nobody move!"

Heavy boots thudded down the concrete stairs. At the front of the tactical team strode a tall, gray-haired man in a trench coat, his hand resting firmly on his service holster.

Arthur Vance scanned the room, his eyes instantly locking onto me standing safely by the doorway.

"Elena," Uncle Arthur breathed, relief washing over his stern face as he holstered his weapon and hurried across the room. "Thank God."

He pulled me into a fierce, tight embrace, burying his face in my hair for a long, shaking moment. "Are you alright? Did they hurt you?"

"I'm okay, Uncle Arthur," I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder. "We're all okay."

Arthur pulled back, looking past me at Richard Vescari, who stood calmly amidst the burning ledgers with federal agents closing in on all sides.

"Richard Vescari," Arthur said, his voice ringing with cold official authority as he pulled a pair of silver handcuffs from his belt. "You're under arrest for grand larceny, corporate securities fraud, and federal conspiracy."

Richard held out his wrists without a word of protest, his expression as frozen and impassive as a marble statue.

As the federal marshals snapped the cuffs onto Richard and hauled Anthony up from the floor, Dominic walked over to where Uncle Arthur and I stood. He extended his hand toward my uncle.

"Agent Vance," Dominic said formally. "Thank you for the timely arrival."

Arthur looked down at Dominic’s outstretched hand, then up at his face, before slowly taking it and giving it a firm shake.

"Don't thank me yet, Mr. Vescari," Arthur said grimly. "Arresting your uncle is the easy part. Cleaning up the financial wreckage of your family's empire is going to take the next ten years."
