Chapter 16 - The Architecture of Deceit

Chloe.

The name hit me like physical blow, but there was no shock left—only an icy, suffocating dread.

Chloe Bennett had been my corporate communications director before she became my mistress. She was sharp, ambitious, and intimately familiar with the inner workings of my life. During those six days in Monterey, she had insisted on keeping our phones off, telling me we needed to "disconnect from the noise" so I could finally decide whether I was going to leave Meline for good.

She hadn't been keeping the noise out. She had been keeping the truth from reaching me while the poison did its work.

I didn't drive back to the estate. I drove straight to the luxury high-rise condominium in the city where Chloe still lived. After our affair ended in the wreckage of Samuel’s death, I had severed all personal contact with her, paid her a substantial severance through the company, and never looked back. I had assumed she moved on with her life.

I stepped out of the elevator on the twenty-fourth floor and walked to door 24B. I knocked hard.

A few moments later, the door opened. Chloe stood there wearing a silk robe, a glass of white wine in her hand. When she saw my face, the casual curiosity on her features vanished, replaced by instant wariness.

"Julian?" she said, stepping back slightly. "What are you doing here? We haven't spoken in ten months."

I didn't answer. I pushed past her into the expansive, sunlit apartment, my eyes scanning the room.

"You can't just barge in here," she said, her voice rising in defensive irritation as she closed the door. "If you're having another crisis of conscience over your dead kid, call your therapist. Don't come here."

I turned around slowly. "Synthetic oxytocin, Chloe."

The wine glass in her hand tilted. A few drops spilled onto the hardwood floor.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she said, but her voice had lost its sharpness. Her breathing turned shallow.

"Batch number 44-Delta," I continued, stepping toward her with deliberate, terrifying calm. "Shipped from an offshore compounding laboratory in the Bahamas to an LLC you established two months before Meline's car crash. The same chemical found in lethal concentrations in Meline’s bloodstream the night Samuel died."

"Julian, stop—"

"You didn't just want me to leave my wife, did you?" I asked, each word cutting like glass. "You knew that even if I divorced Meline, a child would keep us tethered together forever. You knew my family’s trust funds would flow directly to my son, leaving you with whatever table scraps I decided to give you."

"That's insane!" she shrieked, backing away toward the kitchen island. "You're delusional! You're trying to blame me for your own negligence! You were the one who stayed in bed with me for six days while your wife was dying! You made that choice, Julian! Not me!"

"I made my choices, and I have lived in hell for them every single day," I said. "Now it's your turn."

I pulled out my phone and placed it on the counter between us.

"Arthur Davis has the digital receipts from the pharmacy, the customs import documentation for your shell company, and Dr. Reed’s toxicological affidavits. The police aren't investigating a hit-and-run anymore, Chloe. They're preparing an arrest warrant for attempted murder and feticide."

Her face went completely white. The wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering violently against the tile, splashing red wine across her bare feet.

She dropped to her knees, trembling, her eyes wide with terror.

"It wasn't my idea," she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "Julian, please... you have to listen to me! It wasn't my idea!"

"Whose idea was it?" I snarled.

"Your mother!" Chloe cried out, her voice breaking into hysterical gasps. "Evelyn found out about us three months before the crash! She called me to her estate! She told me Meline was from a nobody family, that she would drain the Vance foundation, that she was using the pregnancy to lock down your estate! Evelyn gave me the contact for the pharmacy! She told me it would just cause an early, unviable miscarriage—she said it would look like natural complications! She promised me that once Meline was out of the picture, she would back me as your wife!"

I stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, staring down at the pathetic, weeping woman on the floor.

The horror went deeper than betrayal. It was an abyss.

My mother hadn't covered up Chloe’s crime to protect the family from scandal.

My mother had orchestrated it.
