Chapter 27 - The Broken Miracle

I dropped to my knees in front of her, bringing Samuel down to her level.

"He was resuscitated at 4:12 AM," I explained through the tears streaming down my face. "They moved him before you woke up. They hid him in Wisconsin under a Vance trust alias. I found him last night, Meline. It’s him. It’s our boy."

Meline’s trembling fingers touched Samuel’s cheek. The skin was warm, soft, undeniably alive.

Samuel didn't pull away. He looked at her with those deep, luminous amber eyes—her eyes—and let out a quiet, questioning coo. Then, as if an ancient, dormant memory buried deep within his infant body suddenly recognized the scent and sound of his mother, he leaned his forehead gently against her trembling shoulder.

Meline broke completely.

She pulled him into her arms, burying her face into his neck, letting out wailing, suffocating sobs that echoed through the quiet house. She clutched his small body to her chest with a desperate, crushing tenderness, as if she were trying to pull him back into her very being.

"You're alive," she wept hysterically, kissing his hair, his forehead, his cheeks, his tiny hands over and over again. "You're alive, you're alive, you're alive... God, oh God, my baby, my sweet boy..."

I knelt beside them on the cold floorboards, not daring to intrude upon their sacred reunion, but weeping silently as the crushing weight of fourteen months of guilt finally fractured.

Samuel patted her back with his small palm, confused by the tears, murmuring, "Mama... mama..."

The word stopped Meline’s breath. She pulled back slightly, cupping his face in both of her hands, staring into his eyes with an expression of pure, unadulterated reverence. "Yes, my love. Mama is here. Mama has you. Nobody will ever hurt you again."

Ten minutes passed in that suspended sanctuary before the cold wind blowing through the open front door reminded me of the world waiting outside.

I stood up, walked to the door, closed it, and locked the deadbolt.

Meline was still sitting on the floor, rocking Samuel back and forth, her tears wetting his dark curls. But as the initial shock subsided, her gaze slowly lifted to me.

The grief was gone, replaced by an incandescent, terrifying fury.

"Who did this?" she demanded, her voice shaking with an anger so profound it made the room feel small. "Who took him from me, Julian? Who made me sit in that hospital room and hold an empty blanket?!"

"My mother," I said, meeting her eyes without flinching, accepting every ounce of the venom I deserved. "And Richard Sterling. Elena’s father."

Meline’s breath caught sharply. "Elena."

"Elena supplied the medical transfer documents," I said, laying out the brutal truth without trying to shield myself or anyone else. "They stole him to break you. They thought if you had no child, you would sign the divorce settlement and walk away without Vance assets. And Richard Sterling wanted Samuel kept as leverage to force a merger between our shipping lines."

Meline held Samuel tighter, her eyes blazing with an icy resolve I had never seen in her before. "And where is Richard Sterling now?"

"He has operatives hunting us right now," I replied grimly. "They tried to run us off the road in Kenosha three hours ago. The trust that holds Samuel’s legal paperwork has an autonomous board. Legally, Meline... as far as the state of Illinois is concerned, Samuel Vance is dead, and the boy in your arms is a ward of Crescent Crest Holdings."

Meline slowly stood up, carrying our son with an innate, unbreakable strength.

"They can bring an entire army, Julian," she said, her voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "They will have to tear my heart out of my chest before they touch my son again."
