Chapter 6 - The Cold Advance

The heavy, rhythmic crunch of the tactical operative’s boots on the concrete floor echoed like hammer strikes inside the damp vault.
I pulled Chloe closer, pressing her small body tight against my side as my eyes darted frantically around the room for any heavy object, any tool, any leverage we could use. Caleb didn't wait. With blinding speed, he drew his pistol from his jacket pocket and fired a single round directly into the electrical junction box mounted on the stone wall beside the stairs.
A shower of blinding white sparks erupted in the darkness, accompanied by a deafening electrical pop. The red emergency strip lights flickered wildly and died, plunging the archive into absolute, coal-black darkness.
“Secure the targets!” Beatrice screamed from the stairwell, her voice cut through by the sharp clatter of a rifle being racked. “Shoot to disable! Don't let them reach the back wall!”
“Rachel, run!” Caleb shouted through the gloom, firing two suppression shots toward the sound of approaching footsteps. “Take Chloe into the old electrical maintenance utility shaft behind the server racks!”
“I’m not leaving you!” I cried out, my voice breaking as the sound of a suppressed submachine gun chattered in the dark, sending concrete shrapnel spitting across the floor inches from my boots.
“Move!” Caleb’s voice was an absolute command, hard and desperate.
I grabbed Chloe’s hand, dropping low to the ground as we scrambled blindly behind the humming server racks. The air smelled of hot ozone, copper wiring, and damp earth. My shoulder slammed hard against a rusted metal grate, but I didn't stop. I wedged my fingers into the corroded iron slats, pulling with every ounce of adrenaline left in my body until the rusted rivets popped loose with a shriek of tearing metal.
“In! Get inside, Chloe!” I whispered fiercely, shoving her small frame into the dark, narrow conduit tunnel just as a blinding tactical flashlight beam cut through the smoke behind us.
“I see them!” a gruff voice yelled from the server rows.

I dove headfirst into the tunnel after my daughter, pulling the heavy iron grate shut behind us just as a barrage of bullets chewed into the outer wall.
