Chapter 8 - The Resurrection Ledger

Arthur hurried us down the narrow limestone corridor until we reached a concealed subterranean bunk room lit by a single battery-powered desk lamp. The small space was crowded with maps, computer monitors displaying live satellite feeds of the estate above, and stacks of old financial documents.

“Caleb is still back in the vault,” I gasped, leaning against a wooden table to steady my shaking legs. “Beatrice has him pinned down with two armed operatives!”

Arthur calmly pulled a heavy iron lever on the wall, locking a secondary steel bulkhead door behind us. “Caleb knows how to handle himself. He’s been preparing for this confrontation since the day he found out what Beatrice did to his father.”

He turned back to the computer console, tapping rapidly on a modern mechanical keyboard that hummed with encrypted data.

“Grandpa, what is happening?” I demanded, frustration and fear warring in my chest. “Why did Beatrice transfer the funds into Chloe’s account? What is she planning?”

Arthur’s expression darkened, the light from the monitor casting harsh shadows across his weathered face. “Beatrice didn't transfer that money as a gift, Rachel. It was a trap. By routing the final asset liquidation through a minor’s trust tied to Chloe’s social security number, she legally implicated our entire bloodline in corporate fraud and embezzlement.”

He pulled up a digital schematic of the state’s federal banking oversight portal.

“Within twenty-four hours, federal marshals will freeze every asset, every account, and every property belonging to the Erikson name. Beatrice plans to walk away clean, pinning the entire multi-million dollar racketeering scheme on Caleb and our branch of the family.”

Before I could answer, a loud, concussive explosion echoed through the concrete walls from the direction of the main archive chamber.

The computer monitors flickered, and a red alert banner flashed across the primary screen: STRUCTURAL COMPROMISE DETECTED — SECTOR 4 BULKHEAD BREACHED.

Arthur slammed his fist onto the desk. “They’ve blown the inner vault door. They’re trying to flush out the core servers.”
