Chapter 1 - The Platinum Seal

The low, steady thrum of the Bombardier's twin engines felt entirely different now. The panic that had choked the cabin air only moments before had dissolved into an eerie, heavy quiet, anchored by the rhythmic rise and fall of four-year-old Leo’s chest against Khloe Gallagher’s uniform.
Victor Sterling stood frozen near the bulkhead, his thick arms uncrossed for the first time in ten hours, staring down at the woman who had effortlessly defused a crisis that had terrified a syndicate. Silas Costello remained on his knees on the cream-leather carpet, his broad shoulders slightly slumped, the platinum card still resting half-exposed in Khloe’s uniform breast pocket.
"I don't know sign language," Silas said quietly, his voice drained of the sharp, authoritative edge that usually commanded boardrooms and back rooms alike. "The specialists in Chicago said we had months of therapy ahead before he’d even tolerate touch during an episode. How did you..."
"I worked in a pediatric deaf and hard-of-hearing ward for three years before I took to the skies," Khloe replied, her voice remaining low so as not to startle the sleeping boy. She shifted slightly, adjusting Leo’s weight against her shoulder. "Pressure changes in a cabin don't just hurt ears, Mr. Costello. For a child who already processes the world through vibrations and visual cues, a sudden altitude spike feels like an earthquake inside the skull. He wasn't throwing a tantrum. He was trapped."
Silas flinched as if struck. The admission hung in the stale air between them. Every ruthless business deal, every calculated threat, every violent escalation in his career suddenly felt like a distant, irrelevant noise compared to the heavy, sleeping reality in Khloe’s arms.
Victor stepped forward, his boots making no sound on the thick wool carpet. "Boss, we're six hours out from Geneva. The landing slots are locked, and Dr. Vance is waiting at the private hangar."
Silas didn't look up at his enforcer. His gaze remained fixed on his son’s pale face, smeared with dry tears. Then, slowly, he raised his dark, bloodshot eyes to Khloe. "You saved him from himself today, Miss Gallagher. And you saved me from a helplessness I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy." He reached out, his large hand hovering inches from Leo’s hair before pulling back. "You heard Victor. We land in Geneva in six hours. What happens when we touch down?"
"My shift ends when the wheels hit the tarmac," Khloe said evenly, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. "I hand over the cabin logs, check the inventory, and head to the hotel."
"No," Silas said, the quiet finality in his tone carrying the unmistakable weight of a man accustomed to rearranging the world to suit his immediate needs. "Your contract with the charter service is for this leg, but I am buying out the remainder of your month. You’re coming with us to the estate in Lausanne."
Khloe’s chin lifted. "I am a flight attendant, Mr. Costello, not an indentured nursemaid. You can't just buy people because your money clip is heavy."
Before Silas could answer, Leo stirred, letting out a soft, distressed whimper and pressing his face harder against Khloe’s collarbone. Instantly, Khloe’s posture softened; her left hand came up automatically, beginning a slow, silent sign against his back: [I am here. Sleep.]
Leo’s breathing smoothed out immediately.
Silas watched the exchange, a dark, complex shadow passing over his sharp features. "I'm not offering you a job, Khloe. I’m offering an arrangement. Leo doesn't just need a specialist; he needs someone who speaks his silent language when the world gets too loud. And as for my money..." Silas tapped the platinum card still in her pocket. "That card opens doors in Geneva, Zurich, and Chicago that no amount of ordinary wealth can touch. If you walk off this plane in six hours, you go back to serving champagne to people who treat you like furniture. If you stay for seventy-two hours at the estate, I will clear a debt that has hung over your family name in Chicago for the last ten years."
Khloe’s breath caught in her throat. The steady rhythm of the cabin suddenly felt miles away.
"My family has nothing to do with your syndicate, Mr. Costello," she whispered, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
"Not my syndicate," Silas replied softly, his voice dropping to a gravelly register meant only for her ears. "Your father's old shipping warehouse down on the South Side. The one that burned to the ground the night before the federal audit cleared him of my competitors' books. You think that was an accident of bad wiring?"
Silas stood up slowly, towering over her, the terrifying aura of the mafia boss bleeding back through his bespoke suit, but directed now not with anger, but with leverage.

"Think about it while he sleeps, Khloe," Silas said, turning his back and walking toward the forward cabin. "We touch down in Geneva at dawn. And by the time we land, you'll realize you have more reasons to stay than you do to leave."
