Chapter 6 - The Breach Aftermath

The roar of the second explosive charge died instantly, leaving behind a thick, gray cloud of pulverized concrete and the acrid smell of burnt wiring that drifted down the corridor of the Lausanne estate's lower garage. The reinforced steel roll-up door had crumpled like tin foil, its frame warped inward from the blast.
Silas Costello didn't flinch. His left arm curved around Khloe’s waist, pulling her flat against the reinforced concrete pillar beside the service elevator just as a hail of suppressed rifle fire chewed through the smoke, shattering the windshields of the idling SUVs.
"Stay low," Silas muttered, his voice unnaturally steady as he pressed the heavy steel grip of the compact pistol into her palm. "They aren't trying to capture us, Khloe. If Vance's extraction team wanted prisoners, they wouldn't have used a breach charge on a reinforced seismic wall."
Khloe’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her fingers locked around the checkered polymer grip of the gun with cold, instinctual familiarity. Growing up around a logistics empire's periphery had taught her one vital truth: panic was a tax you paid in blood. She didn't look at Silas; her eyes were locked on the churning smoke at the garage entrance.
"They're coming for the ledgers in the vault," Khloe said, her voice dropping an octave into a low, razor-sharp register. "And they're coming for Uncle David because his signature is the only chain of custody tying the Department of Transportation's black-budget routes to the syndicate."
"Precisely," Silas murmured, a grim, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Are you going to stand here and let them take what's left of your family history, or are you going to help me stop them?"
Before Khloe could answer, a tactical flashbang grenade arced through the broken roll-up door, landing with a sharp clatter ten feet across the concrete floor.
"Eyes down, ears covered!" Silas shouted, shoving Khloe further behind the structural pillar and dropping his own weight low.
CRACK-FLASH.
The subterranean garage erupted into a blinding white glare and a concussion wave that rattled teeth. Through the ringing in her ears, Khloe watched two black-clad operatives in federal tactical gear step through the smoke, their automatic weapons raised.
They didn't expect a flight attendant who had spent three years managing high-stress emergency protocols in a pediatric trauma ward to move faster than their adrenaline spikes.
Khloe didn't hesitate. She stepped out from the shadow of the pillar, brought the compact SIG Sauer up with both hands, and squeezed the trigger twice. The sharp, concussive reports echoed off the concrete walls. The lead operative stumbled backward, his tactical vest absorbing the rounds, but the impact dropped him hard to one knee.
Beside her, Silas rose like a coiled spring, his weapon tracking the second operative with ruthless efficiency. Two fluid shots clipped the intruder's shoulder rig, sending his rifle clattering across the slick floor.
"Clear!" Silas barked, his eyes scanning the smoke for secondary movement.
There was none. The tactical unit had retreated behind the exterior stone ridge, realizing the element of surprise was gone.
Silas lowered his weapon and turned to Khloe. A drop of dark blood trickled from a shallow graze along his temple where a piece of flying concrete had clipped him, but he didn't seem to notice. He stared at her with a look that wasn't gratitude anymore—it was absolute, terrifying respect.
"You've never fired a weapon at a living target before today, have you?" Silas asked quietly.
May you like
"No," Khloe said, her hands trembling only slightly as she lowered the safety on the pistol. She looked down at the smoke-stained concrete, then up at Silas. "But I've spent eleven years watching men like you pretend they're untouchable while ordinary people pay for your wars. Let's go find my uncle."
