Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

My eyes scanned the digital signature line over and over again. The cryptographic timestamp verified the execution date: exactly three weeks ago, routed through an encrypted IP address originating from a terminal registered to Apex Horizon Trust's downtown server room.

"How?" I whispered, the sheer impossibility of it striking me harder than any physical blow. "I never authorized this bridge loan. My private keys are secured behind biometric authentication and hardware tokens."

Marcus swallowed hard, his face pale. "Ethan... someone inside your own executive team didn't just leak your credentials. They used your admin override to forge the primary guarantor seal while you were in Zurich auditing the European acquisitions."

Across the table, Rosie’s triumphant smirk slowly faded, replaced by sudden confusion as she watched my reaction. She hadn't known about the forgery; she had simply assumed Victor's desperate gamble had trapped the family as a whole. But realizing that my name was the one shackled to a four-million-dollar predatory debt changed the shape of the entire room.

"It wasn't Victor," I said quietly, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. "And it wasn't you, Dad."

Victor looked up, blinking through his tears. "What are you talking about? Who else could have accessed your private server?"

Before I could answer, my phone on the mahogany table vibrated once. Just a single, sharp pulse.

A text message notification flashed across the locked screen from an unknown, unlisted number:

> “The midnight maturity window is non-negotiable, Mr. Vance. If the four million isn't wired to the Cayman accounts by 12:00 a.m., we won't just seize Vance Freight. We’ll start collecting our collateral from your personal residence.”

Below the text was a second attachment: a live high-definition security camera still frame of my private penthouse downtown, showing a sleek, unmarked black sedan idling quietly across the street from my private garage entrance.

I looked up from the screen and met Marcus’s stunned gaze. The threat wasn't theoretical anymore. The trap hadn't been set by Rosie's petty cruelty or Victor's amateur embezzlement. Someone inside my own inner circle had engineered this entire crisis from the very beginning, using my family's ignorance as camouflage to lure me into an inescapable financial ambush.

And whoever pulled the strings was already waiting outside my door.
