Chapter 8 - The Weight of Inheritance

The data stream on Julian’s monitors froze abruptly as the master security override locked down every external USB port and network interface in the room. The external hard drive beside his keyboard clicked twice, its indicator light shifting from flashing blue to solid, unforgiving red.
Julian lunged across the desk, his fingers clawing for the drive, but I reached out and caught his wrist with a grip like iron.
"Don't touch it, Julian," I said, my voice low and hard. "Every byte of data you copied from the core servers has already been mirrored to a secure federal repository. The SEC didn't just get the Vance Freight audit trail tonight. They got your entire portfolio of unregistered insider trades dating back three years."
Julian yanked his arm back, breathing heavily, his veneer of cool detachment completely gone. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his fingers trembled as he gripped the edge of the desk.
"You can't do this," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, desperate realization. "We’re family, Ethan. Well—we’re practically brothers. We shared everything!"
"You tried to hand me over to a predatory syndicate just so you could pick the bones of my company," I replied, releasing his wrist and stepping back. "You didn't care if Vance Freight dragged my father and my sister down with it, and you certainly didn't care if my name ended up on a federal indictment."
The heavy office door pushed open, and Marcus stepped into the room, holding a thick manila envelope and a digital tablet. Behind him stood two uniformed private security officers from Apex’s internal compliance division.
"The federal marshals have already been notified of the Cayman asset transfer," Marcus said evenly, not even sparing Julian a glance. "The Blackwood Syndicate's local intermediaries were intercepted outside the parking garage three minutes ago by local authorities acting on our unsealed financial fraud warrant. The bridge loan default is nullified due to fraudulent identity misrepresentation under federal statute."
Julian slumped back into the leather chair, staring blankly at the dark monitors. The empire he thought he was stealing had just collapsed around him in less than five minutes.
"What happens now?" Julian muttered, his voice hollow.
"Now you pack up your personal belongings, hand over your security badges, and spend the rest of your life explaining to federal investigators why you thought you could outsmart a firm you helped build," I said, turning away from him toward the window.
Outside, the rain was washing the city streets clean, reflecting the amber glow of the streetlights against the wet pavement.
"Ethan," Julian called out quietly as the security officers stepped forward to flank his chair.
I didn't turn around.
"Your father called my cell phone while you were coming up in the elevator," Julian said, his voice trembling slightly. "He didn't call to check on Victor or Rosie. He asked if you were coming back to the estate tonight."

My jaw tightened. I stared through the glass at my own reflection, wondering how much of my family’s relentless cruelty had been a product of their own greed, and how much of it was simply a generational curse I had finally managed to break.
