Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The mahogany table in Adrian’s private study was littered with financial printouts, bank statements, and encrypted data logs retrieved by his cyber-security team. The digital clock on the wall glowed 3:14 AM, casting a harsh, emerald hue across Adrian’s exhausted face. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours.

"Boss," Marcus said, stepping into the study and laying a fresh stack of encrypted drives on the desk. "We decrypted the remaining files from that Delaware shell company Claire used to set up her workshop."

Adrian looked up, his eyes bloodshot, dark circles bruising the skin beneath them. "And?"

"It’s not just an independent restoration shop," Marcus said, his voice hesitant. "We found the original capitalization source. The seed money didn't come from her personal trust or her grandmother's jewelry sales."

"Where did it come from?"

"Three years ago," Marcus said, bringing up a digital ledger on the study’s main monitor. "A massive shipment of high-grade contraband destined for the South Side docks was intercepted and seized by federal agents. The loss to our syndicate was estimated at twelve million dollars. Adrian, you blamed a rival crew at the time. You executed two of our own capos because you thought they leaked the manifest."

Adrian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. The numbers on the monitor weren't random. They matched the exact valuation of the seized cargo.

"Go on," Adrian whispered.

"The federal seizure was a ghost," Marcus continued. "The paperwork was filed under a phantom federal task force. But when we traced the destination of the liquidated assets from that seizure, the funds didn't go to the federal government. They were funneled through a series of offshore holding companies that ultimately led directly into Claire’s private accounts."

The room seemed to drop twenty degrees. Adrian stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug.

"Claire?" Adrian choked out, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "Claire intercepted my shipment? Claire leaked the manifest?"

"She didn't just leak it," Marcus said grimly. "She engineered the entire federal bust. She had access to your operational schedules, the warehouse codes, and the shipping manifests because she managed your personal archive for five years. She built her entire exit strategy using your own stolen capital."

Adrian stood frozen, the foundations of his entire world fracturing beneath his feet. For ten years, he had viewed Claire as the fragile, emotional, slightly erratic wife who needed his protection—a woman who crashed his cars because she couldn't cope with the harsh realities of his underworld life.

She hadn't been breaking down because she was weak. She had been breaking down because she was trapped inside a life she despised, plotting her escape right under his nose while he arrogantly believed he held all the cards.

"She played me," Adrian muttered, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw shock and a strange, burning reverence he couldn't bring himself to name. "For three years, she was already leaving."

"That's not the worst of it, Boss," Marcus added quietly, tapping another file on the screen. "Look at who signed off on the secondary logistics permits for her workshop property in West Madison."

Adrian stepped closer to the monitor, his eyes scanning the digital signature at the bottom of the municipal document.

The name listed as the property guarantor wasn't a corporate entity or a dummy corporation. It was Elena Vance—Viktor Vance’s estranged younger sister, who supposedly lived off-grid in Europe.

"Elena Vance," Adrian said, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping into place. "Viktor didn't just stumble onto her shop. They’ve been in communication for months."

"Worse," Marcus said. "If Viktor is backing her venture, and Claire used syndicate capital to fund it, this isn't just a domestic dispute anymore. It’s a direct economic war against your territory. If the council finds out your ex-wife funded her independent empire using stolen syndicate money, your authority will be completely undermined."

Adrian stared at the glowing monitor, his mind racing through a dozen different tactical scenarios. Every instinct he possessed screamed at him to mobilize his enforcers, storm the West Madison workshop, drag Claire back to the estate, and force her to answer for what she had done.

But as he looked at the security photograph of Claire standing in her workshop, her face smudged with grease, laughing at something off-camera with a fierce, unapologetic independence, a heavy, suffocating weight settled over his chest.

If he treated her like an enemy combatant and sent his enforcers after her, he would destroy the only real thing he had ever possessed. But if he didn't act, Viktor Vance would use her as a weapon to tear his empire apart from the inside out.

Adrian reached out, grabbed his car keys from the desk, and turned toward the door.

"Where are you going, Adrian?" Marcus asked, stepping into his path. "If you go down there now, you're walking straight into Viktor’s trap."

"I'm not walking into a trap," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a cold, terrifying stillness. "I'm going to talk to my wife."
