Chapter 8 - The Weight of Steel

The old railway yard on the city’s industrial fringe was a graveyard of rusted boxcars, weed-choked tracks, and looming coal towers that cast skeletal shadows against the midnight sky. A cold wind swept in off Lake Michigan, carrying the bitter sting of winter and the metallic tang of old iron.
Adrian stepped out of his armored SUV, his movements deliberate and controlled. He wore no coat, only his dark suit, the rain having long since stopped, leaving the ground slick with black puddles of oily water. In his right hand, he carried a heavy steel briefcase containing the master administrative keys to the South Side ports—the literal keys to his entire economic kingdom.
"Drop the case and step back, Moretti!"
The harsh glare of high-beam headlights suddenly pierced the darkness from behind a row of rusted boxcars. Viktor Vance stepped out from the illumination, flanked by four heavily armed enforcers.
A few yards away, tied rigidly to a wooden chair near the base of an old crane, sat Claire. Her dark hair was loose, blowing across her face in the wind, her hands secured behind her back with heavy zip-ties. Her jaw was set, and though there was a small, dark bruise forming along her cheekbone, her eyes burned with an unyielding, furious defiance as she locked gaze with Adrian.
Adrian didn't look at Viktor. His eyes remained fixed on Claire. "Are you alright?" he called out, his voice cutting through the wind.
"I've been better," Claire called back, her voice remarkably steady, though strain laced her words. "Next time you pick an ex-husband, make sure he doesn't come with a lunatic fan club."
"Shut her up," Viktor snapped, gesturing to one of his guards, who stepped closer to Claire with a menacing grin.
"Touch her again, Viktor, and you won't live long enough to spend my ports," Adrian said, his voice dropping into an ice-cold register that made even Viktor’s hardened enforcers hesitate.
Adrian stopped twenty feet away, setting the heavy steel briefcase down onto the gravel between them. He kicked it forward with the toe of his shoe until it slid to a stop near Viktor’s polished leather boots.
"The keys to the South Side ports," Adrian said, his eyes locking onto Viktor’s. "Every maritime contract, every logistics route, every customs override. It's all in there. Encrypted and verified."
Viktor looked down at the briefcase, a triumphant, greedy smile spreading across his face. He crouched down, unlatched the heavy metal clasps, and flipped the lid open to inspect the digital drives resting inside. "You really are a romantic, Adrian. You gave up an empire just for a woman who spent three years plotting your ruin."
"She didn't ruin me, Viktor," Adrian said quietly, his hands resting easily at his sides. "She’s the only real thing I ever had. Which is more than I can say for the partner you thought you bought."
Viktor frowned, pausing as he reached for a drive. "What are you talking about?"
"Sophia didn't give you a partnership," Adrian said, taking a slow step forward. "She gave you a suicide note. While you've been sitting here waiting to ambush me, her automated offshore servers have been transferring your entire European capital reserve into a dormant holding account registered under the federal task force."
Viktor’s head snapped up, the color draining from his face. "You're lying."
"Check your phone, Viktor," Adrian challenged softly. "If you still have service."
Viktor cursed, pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his coat pocket. His fingers flew across the screen, pulling up his primary corporate ledger. As he read the data, his expression shifted from triumphant greed to blind, unadulterated terror. The screen flashed a red system alert: Account Balance: $0.00.
"She gutted us both," Viktor whispered, staggering slightly as the realization hit him.
"Not both," Adrian said, and before Viktor could raise his weapon, the sound of heavy sirens suddenly echoed across the railway yard from three different directions.
Red and blue emergency lights flashed violently against the rusted boxcars, illuminating the yard as half a dozen unmarked federal and syndicate vehicles converged on the perimeter, cutting off every escape route.
Viktor spun around, cursing wildly, but his enforcers were already dropping their weapons, realizing they were completely surrounded.
Adrian didn't waste another second. He ignored Viktor entirely, sprinting across the gravel toward Claire. He pulled a small pocketknife from his suit trousers, sliced through the zip-ties binding her wrists, and pulled her upright into his arms.
Claire stumbled slightly, leaning against his chest for a single, breathless second before stepping back, her eyes sharp and assessing.
"You called the feds?" she asked, a wry smile touching her lips despite the chaos around them.
May you like
"I didn't call the feds," Adrian said, his jaw tight as he watched federal agents tackle Viktor Vance into the mud. "Marcus did. And right now, Marcus is paying a very polite visit to Sophia’s penthouse."
