Chapter 4 - The Manager’s Safe

The upper metal catwalk groaned softly beneath our boots as we hurried toward the glass-enclosed office suspended over the central shipping floor.
I tried the door handle. Unlocked. Careless, arrogant mistakes were the hallmark of criminals who believed their local political protection made them invincible.
We stepped inside the small office. The desk was covered in empty coffee cups, sports betting slips, and scattered invoices. Behind a rolling metal filing cabinet in the corner sat a heavy, fireproof floor safe bearing a digital keypad.
“Do you know the combination?” Eleanor asked, sweeping her flashlight beam across the desk drawer for any written clues.
“I don't need a combination,” I said, kneeling down in front of the safe and pulling a small carbon-fiber tension tool and a stethoscope-style acoustic pick from my belt pouch.
Back in the recon units, our signals intelligence specialists taught us that mechanical backup overrides on commercial-grade digital safes were almost never disabled due to municipal fire safety codes. All it took was patience, tactile sensitivity, and the ability to listen to the microscopic tumbler drops inside the heavy steel housing.
Click... clack... tick.
I rotated the dial left to 34, right to 12, left to 58.
With a deep, satisfying metallic thud, the primary locking bolts retracted.
I swung the heavy steel door open.
Inside sat three neat stacks of cash wrapped in bank bands, a modular flash drive labeled CITY COUNCIL PAYOFFS — 2026, and a thick, leather-bound ledger with gold-embossed lettering on the cover: VANCE LOGISTICS MASTER ASSET INVENTORY.
“Got it,” I murmured, pulling the ledger and the flash drive out from the safe.
Before I could hand them to Eleanor, the heavy metal door at the bottom of the warehouse stairs slammed open with a deafening bang.
“Hey! Who the hell is upstairs?!” a gruff voice roared, echoing off the corrugated metal walls.
Heavy, hurried footsteps began pounding up the metal staircase toward the catwalk.

Eleanor raised her Sig Sauer, her eyes flashing in the dim ambient light, leveling it directly at the office door. “Lucas... they’re here.”
