Chapter 8 - The Fourth-Floor Corridor

With a sharp, silent pull, I slipped the latch and pushed the heavy metal door outward just an inch.

The fourth-floor corridor was bathed in the pale, amber glow of emergency wall lights. Two men in dark tactical jackets and ski masks were standing directly outside Evelyn’s room, number 412. One of them held a compact sniper rifle with a thermal scope slung over his shoulder; the other was casually tossing a set of master keys in his palm.

“Last call for the sergeant,” the one with the keys sneered softly. “Let’s go in.”

They turned toward the door of room 412.

I didn't give them a second chance. I kicked the fire door wide open, sending it crashing against the drywall with a thunderous bang that echoed down the tile hallway.

“Federal agents! Don't move!” I roared, closing the distance across the corridor in three explosive strides.

The guard with the keys spun around in sheer panic, reaching for the sidearm holstered at his belt. Before his fingers could even wrap around the grip, I drove my palm upward into his chin, snapping his head back and sending him crashing hard against the tile wall, unconscious before he hit the floor.

The second guard—the sniper—reacted with professional speed, dropping his rifle sling and pivoting toward me with a tactical combat knife drawn from his chest rig.

“You’re dead, old man!” he snarled, lunging forward with a downward slash aimed straight at my collarbone.

I sidestepped the blade by a fraction of an inch, letting his momentum carry him past me, and caught his forearm in a tight, two-hand joint-lock. With a sharp, sudden twist, I hyper-extended his elbow past its natural limit.

A sharp pop echoed down the hallway as the guard screamed out in agony, dropping the knife onto the linoleum floor. I swept his legs out from under him and planted my boot squarely across his chest, pressing down until the air left his lungs in a sharp gasp.

Behind me, the door to room 412 clicked open.

Eleanor pushed past us into the room, her weapon raised, her eyes scanning every corner.

A second later, a soft, frightened voice came from the hospital bed.
