Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ledger

Dante stared at the small silver key resting on the mahogany table. It sat beside the dissolution papers like a punctuation mark at the end of a sentence he hadn't chosen to write.

"Geneva?" Dante repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. "You expect me to run? To pack a bag and disappear into the Alps while my company, my name, and my home get carved up by Viktor and his mercenaries?"

"It’s not running, Dante. It’s surviving," Miriam said, stepping between him and the door. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a secure, encrypted satellite phone, placing it beside the key. "The private jet is fueled and sitting on a private tarmac thirty miles outside the city limits. Your pilot is already on board. The flight plan is filed under an alias that even the federal government won't track for forty-eight hours."

Dante didn't look at the satellite phone. His eyes were fixed entirely on Elena.

"And you?" Dante asked, his voice tightening. "Where do you go when I board that plane?"

Elena looked away, her gaze drifting back out toward the rain-streaked window where the city lights were beginning to blur into the evening gloom. "I stay here. Under Arthur’s protection. My presence is the only thing keeping Viktor from executing a hostile takeover of the hospital tonight. As long as I am carrying the primary heir, the syndicate’s internal bylaws protect me from direct action."

"You're using our child as a shield," Dante said, his voice rising with disbelief and disgust.

"I am using the only leverage that matters in this war," Elena snapped back, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce defiance that matched his own. "Do you think I wanted this? Do you think I spent months planning an corporate coup because I enjoyed lying to you across the breakfast table every morning?"

She stepped right up to him, her chest nearly touching his, her voice dropping into a raw, trembling register.

"I did it because I knew that if I didn't strip your empire away piece by piece, your arrogance was going to get you killed before this baby took its first breath," Elena whispered, a single tear finally breaking free and tracking down her cheek. "I took your money, Dante. I took your buildings. I took your pride. Because the alternative was burying you."

Dante stood frozen, the words hanging in the sterile air between them like broken glass. For the first time in his life, he saw the full, devastating picture of his own reflection—not through the lens of his criminal dominance, but through the eyes of the woman who had tried to save him from himself.

He reached out, his thumb gently wiping the tear from her cheek. She flinched slightly at the contact, but didn't pull away.

"If I sign these papers," Dante murmured, his voice thick with emotion, "and I get on that plane... how do I know you'll be on the flight to Geneva next week?"

Elena didn't answer immediately. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her own phone, unlocked it, and slid it across the table toward him.

The screen displayed an active flight tracker app. A single red dot was pulsing steadily over the Atlantic, moving eastward.

"That's Arthur's backup transport," Elena said quietly. "It leaves three hours after yours. We meet at the chalet in Verbier. Assuming, of course..."

She hesitated, her gaze dropping to her stomach before rising back to meet his eyes.

"Assuming what?" Dante asked.

"Assuming Viktor doesn't find out about the secondary routing code before then," Elena whispered.

Before Dante could press her further, the overhead fluorescent lights in suite 312 flickered violently once, twice, and then cut out completely.

The room plunged into sudden, heavy darkness, save for the pale blue glow of the laptop screen on the table. Outside in the third-floor hallway, the steady hum of the hospital's ventilation system abruptly died, replaced by an unnatural, suffocating silence.

From down the corridor came the distinct, heavy sound of a single set of tactical boots marching steadily toward their door.
