Chapter 7 - Ash and Ink

The smoke from the burning jet didn't reach the hospital room, but the reality of it hung in the air like suffocating ash.
Dante slowly lowered the satellite phone. The screen flickered once and went black as the battery died, leaving only the dim emergency lights of the corridor casting long, distorted shadows across the floor.
Viktor stood in the doorway, casually wiping his bleeding lip with the back of a tactical glove. "You see, Dante? You can play corporate chess all you want, rewriting trusts and dissolving LLCs, but the board was never yours to clear. Arthur Vance suffered a massive coronary about twenty minutes ago. His estate is currently being divided between the board—and guess who holds the majority voting proxy now?"
Elena pulled herself up from the floor, leaning heavily against the mahogany table. Her face was pale, but the panic in her eyes had hardened back into a dangerous, calculated resolve.
"You're lying," Elena said, her voice cutting through the silence like glass. "Arthur’s health was monitored by an independent Swiss medical council. He wouldn't just drop dead on the morning of the transition."
"Old men tend to have sudden heart conditions when their granddaughters try to steal a fifty-million-dollar logistics network," Viktor replied smoothly, stepping further into the room. He didn't draw another weapon; he didn't need to. He held all the cards now. "The board has already voted to invalidate the spousal abandonment clause. The restructuring your clever attorney executed this morning? It requires Arthur's physical signature to be filed with the international maritime commission by midnight. Without him, the transfer is void. Moretti Holdings reverts back to the syndicate."
Dante looked at Viktor, then slowly turned his gaze to Elena.
The pieces clicked into place with terrifying clarity. The hurried marriage, the quiet investigations, the meticulous restructuring—Elena hadn't just been trying to save him from a criminal indictment. She had been racing against a clock that was ticking down to Arthur’s planned elimination.
"You knew," Dante said softly, his eyes locking onto his wife’s face. "You knew Arthur was going to be targeted today."
Elena flinched, looking away for a single, agonizing second before meeting his gaze. "I knew they would try. That’s why we had to move before dawn. If we had reached Geneva—"
"We wouldn't have been safe there either," Dante finished for her. He let out a harsh, humorless laugh, running a hand through his damp hair. "There is no Geneva. There never was an escape hatch, was there? It was just a safe zone you hoped we could reach before the house of cards collapsed."
"I was trying to keep you alive, Dante!" Elena snapped, her voice finally cracking with the emotional weight she had been carrying for months. "Every choice I made was to pull you out of the crosshairs before Viktor and the board realized you were a liability!"
"And instead, you walked us right into the center of the trap," Viktor interrupted, his tone mocking as he stepped closer. "Now, here is how this is going to work, Moretti. You are going to sign the reinstatement papers for the logistics network. You are going to hand over the private encryption keys to the Swiss servers. And your wife is going to sign over her independent LLC back to the board."
Viktor paused, letting a cold, cruel smile touch his lips. "Do that, and I’ll let you both live out the rest of your days in a very comfortable, very secure house in Argentina. Refuse, and let's just say complications can happen during childbirth."
Dante didn't move. He looked down at the silver key still resting on the mahogany table. The anger in his chest had burned down to something white-hot and steady.
"You think you won, Viktor," Dante said quietly, his voice dropping into a register that made the security chief’s smile falter slightly. "You think because Arthur is dead and the jet is burned, you hold all the leverage."
"I hold your wife, your child, and your future," Viktor said, stepping forward to grab the papers.
Before Viktor’s fingers could touch the documents, Dante snatched the silver key off the table, turned, and hurled it directly through the glass observation window of the hospital suite.
The glass shattered with a deafening crash into the empty hallway outside.
"What the hell did you do?!" Viktor barked, lunging forward.
May you like
"I just triggered the building's emergency lockdown," Dante said, stepping in front of Elena and shielding her with his body. "This isn't my corporate office, Viktor. This is St. Jude’s Memorial. And the moment that glass broke, the fire and security sensors linked to the city precinct went live."
