Chapter 2 - The Visitor at the Door

The knock came again, sharper this time, accompanied by the frantic scratching of fingernails against the exterior brick.

"Claire, I know you're in there. Please. Just talk to me for two minutes."

I stood up slowly from the armchair, my bare feet padding silently across the wooden floorboards. I walked over to the heavy steel door and peered through the narrow, fisheye peephole.

Vanessa stood alone under the flickering hallway light. The high-fashion gown that had looked so immaculate in the Vale ballroom was rumpled, her designer coat clutched tightly around her throat like armor against a freezing wind. Her mascara was smeared in dark streaks down her cheeks, and her chest was heaving. There was no trace of the poised, untouchable "executive liaison" who had stood beside my husband an hour ago. She looked terrified.

"Go away, Vanessa," I said loudly through the reinforced metal.

"He's looking everywhere for you," she cried out, her voice cracking. "The police aren't, but his security teams are tearing the city apart. He thinks you're going to file for an emergency injunction. He thinks you're going to destroy him."

"Let him panic," I replied coldly. "It’s a fraction of what he earned tonight."

"You don't understand," Vanessa pleaded, pressing her forehead against the cool metal of the door. "You think Dominic is this untouchable monster who controls everything, but you don't know the half of it. The foundation... the gala... it wasn't just a social event. It was an audition."

I paused, my hand resting on the middle deadbolt. "What are you talking about?"

"Open the door, Claire. I'm freezing, and I didn't come here to fight with you. If Dominic finds out I'm here, my life is just as over as yours."

I stared at the heavy lock. Every instinct told me to keep her out, to let her freeze in the hallway, to cut every tie to that world immediately. But the word audition hung in the air like a hook.

I turned the locks, pulled the door open six inches, and kept the safety chain securely fastened.

Vanessa blinked against the sudden light of the loft, her eyes wide and bloodshot. She looked down at the chain, then up at my face. "You really are done, aren't you?"

"Get to the point, Vanessa. Why are you here?"

She swallowed hard, her hands trembling inside her coat pockets. "Dominic didn't announce me tonight because he loves me, Claire. Let's get that straight right now. He announced me because he had to."

I arched an eyebrow, leaning against the doorframe. "Billionaire CEOs don't have to publicly humiliate their wives and parade their mistresses unless they're extraordinarily arrogant or backed into a corner."

"Try both," Vanessa whispered bitterly. "Six months ago, when Dominic hired me, I thought I was stepping into a dream job. Corporate restructuring, managing his private acquisitions. But two months in, I found out what he was actually acquiring. The Vale Foundation isn't a charity. It's a front for bad debt consolidation tied to his uncle’s shipping syndicates in Boston. The family is bleeding money, Claire. Millions of it."

My stomach tightened. I knew the Vale family was wealthy, but Dominic had always kept me completely insulated from the financial machinations of his corporate empire. Whenever I asked about business, he simply smiled, kissed my forehead, and told me to worry about interior design and charity boards.

"What does that have to do with you?" I asked.

"Uncle Arthur Vale set a condition for the bailout," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a frantic whisper. "A traditional heir. A bloodline tie that could legally bind the Boston assets to Dominic's corporate charter before the board votes on the merger next month. Dominic needed a child, and he needed it fast. When I found out I was pregnant three weeks ago—" Vanessa stopped, a bitter, self-loathing smile twisting her lips. "I thought I had hit the jackpot. I thought I was going to be Mrs. Vale."

The air in the hallway seemed to grow heavy. I stared at the woman standing on the other side of my security chain, seeing the complete devastation of her own ambitions reflected in her eyes.

"And then," Vanessa continued, her voice breaking, "you pulled that ultrasound out of your purse. You’re already seven weeks pregnant, Claire. That means your baby was conceived before we even slept together. Your child is legally, indisputably the primary heir to the entire Vale estate."

"Which means," I finished slowly, the puzzle pieces violently snapping into place, "your pregnancy is suddenly useless to Uncle Arthur and his board."

May you like

"Useless?" Vanessa laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "Worse than useless, Claire. To Uncle Arthur, I'm now a loose end. And Dominic? Dominic just realized he didn't just break his marriage tonight. He just handed his entire empire to the wife he tried to discard."
