Chapter 4 - The Sound of Footsteps

The headlights cut out, plunging the street below into darkness, but the heavy thud of car doors slamming shut echoed distinctly up through the brickwork.
"We need to get out of here," Vanessa whispered, scrambling backward from the counter, her eyes darting toward the freight elevator at the back of the loft. "If it's Uncle Arthur's men, they won't knock. They don't care about a conversation."
"There's a fire escape through the utility room," I said, my voice cutting through her panic with a cold, clear focus I didn't know I possessed. The fear was still there, buzzing in my veins, but it was no longer paralyzing. It had hardened into something sharp and defensive.
We moved quickly. I grabbed my leather coat from the hook by the door, shoved my wallet, keys, and phone into my pocket, and made sure the velvet box containing the tiny white socks and ultrasound was safely tucked inside my inner coat pocket. I wasn't leaving my proof behind for anyone to find.
As we reached the heavy metal door of the utility exit, the distinct sound of iron scraping against iron rang out from the main hallway.
Heavy boots. Multiple sets. Moving with calculated, rhythmic efficiency.
"Too late," Vanessa breathed, grabbing my arm so hard her fingernails dug through my sleeve. "They're already in the stairwell."
"Quiet," I hissed, pulling her back into the shadows behind a towering stack of rolled canvases and old architectural drafting tables from my art gallery days.
The main door of the loft didn't splinter under a battering ram. Instead, there was a soft, metallic click—the sound of a professional skeleton key turning in a deadbolt. A second later, the heavy door swung open.
A tall figure stepped into the dim light of the entryway. Even in the shadows, the broad shoulders and tailored silhouette were unmistakable.
It wasn't Uncle Arthur’s muscle. It was Dominic.
He stood alone in the doorway for a long moment, his chest heaving, his tie gone and his collar unbuttoned. He looked less like the untouchable CEO of the Vale Corporation and more like a man who had just run through a war zone. His dark eyes swept the empty living space, landing instantly on the shattered glass on the kitchen tile.
"Claire!" Dominic called out, his voice raw, stripped of all its corporate polish. "I know you're here. Answer me."
I stayed silent behind the canvas stack, holding my breath. Beside me, Vanessa was trembling so violently I had to press my hand over her mouth to keep her teeth from chattering.
Dominic walked further into the room, his footsteps heavy and uneven. He stopped by the armchair where I had been sitting earlier. He reached down slowly and picked up a single hairpin I had dropped on the cushion. He clutched it in his fist, his knuckles turning white.
"I didn't mean it," Dominic whispered to the empty room, his voice cracking with a vulnerability I had never, in four years of marriage, heard him express. "The announcement... the board forced my hand, Claire. Uncle Arthur said if I didn't legitimize Vanessa's claim before the merger, they'd strip my voting rights and liquidate the residential portfolio. Everything I built... everything I promised you... I thought I could control it."
I felt a cold, bitter anger rise in my throat. He thought he could control everything. His business, his mistress, his wife, and his child.
"Mr. Vale."
A second voice echoed from the open doorway. A cold, gravelly tone that made Dominic instantly snap upright.
An older man stepped into the loft, flanked by two burly men in identical dark overcoats. Uncle Arthur. He walked with a heavy silver-headed cane, tapping it against the floor with every step. His face was a roadmap of cruel ambition and aged ruthlessness.
"I see your runaway wife isn't here to greet you, Dominic," Arthur said smoothly, his eyes scanning the room with cold amusement. "Or perhaps she had some unexpected company."
Dominic spun around, his towering frame locking into a defensive posture. "Get out of here, Arthur. This is my private property."
"Your private property?" Arthur chuckled, a dry, grating sound. "My dear boy, as of midnight tonight, the emergency board provisions went into effect. Your public declaration dissolved the matrimonial trust buffer. Until a legal settlement is signed—or until we locate Mrs. Vale and ensure the proper disposition of her assets—this building, the penthouse, and your corporate shares are under provisional receivership."
Dominic stepped toward his uncle, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "If you touch her, Arthur, I will tear this entire corporation down to the studs before I let you or the board near her."
"You won't have a choice," Arthur replied calmly, leaning heavily on his cane. "Especially if the child she's carrying happens to... experience an unfortunate accident before the custody hearings begin."
My heart stopped.

Beside me, Vanessa let out a sharp, horrified gasp.
