Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Door

Within twenty-four hours, the machinery of corporate accountability began to move with terrifying speed.

Marcus had taken my file straight to a contact in the U.S. Attorney’s office. By Tuesday evening, preliminary asset freezes had been slapped on all three of Mercer Construction’s commercial bank accounts, as well as Linda Mercer’s personal investment portfolio.

I was sitting in my temporary apartment, reviewing a digital printout of the frozen bank accounts, when a sharp, authoritative knock sounded at the front door.

My heart skipped a beat. For a fraction of a second, I imagined Ryan standing out there, fueled by blind panic and desperation, tracking me down through my credit card pings.

I stood up slowly, walking to the peephole.

It wasn't Ryan.

Standing in the hallway was a tall, middle-aged man in a charcoal suit holding a leather briefcase, flanked by a uniformed local police officer.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open a few inches, keeping the security chain fastened.

"Mrs. Audrey Mercer?" the man asked, flashing a federal investigator’s badge through the gap.

"Yes," I answered steadily.

"I'm Special Agent Vance with the federal financial crimes task force," he said, his tone professional and polite. "We received a comprehensive forensic audit package submitted by Marcus Vance on your behalf regarding Mercer Construction and associated entities."

The officer beside him gave a polite nod.

"We need to ask you a few questions regarding your access to these documents, Mrs. Mercer," the agent continued, stepping closer. "And specifically, whether you are willing to cooperate as a principal witness in an impending indictment against Ryan Mercer and Linda Mercer for wire fraud, forgery, and interstate financial conspiracy."

I looked past the agent down the empty, carpeted hallway of the apartment complex. The chapter of my life where I was a quiet, invisible wife hiding behind someone else's name was officially over.

I reached out, unlatched the security chain, and swung the heavy door wide open.

"Agent Vance," I said, stepping back to let them in. "I’ve been waiting for you to ask."
