Chapter 7 - The Desperate Pleading

The phone buzzed continuously against the wood grain, its sharp, rhythmic vibration echoing in the confined space of the apartment.

Agent Vance looked down at the glowing screen, then raised an eyebrow at me. He didn't speak, but his silent permission was clear.

"Put it on speaker, Mrs. Mercer," Vance murmured quietly, pulling a digital audio recorder from his pocket and placing it near the phone.

I reached out, my fingers steady despite the phantom ache in my ribs, and pressed the accept button. I slid the volume to maximum.

"Audrey!" Ryan’s voice tore through the speaker, breathless, erratic, and soaked in absolute terror. The confident, domineering tone he had worn for three years had completely evaporated, replaced by the panicked whine of a cornered animal. "Audrey, where are you?! The feds—federal agents just raided the warehouse! They seized our trucks, they froze every corporate account, and they’re talking about federal indictments!"

I didn't say a word. I let the silence stretch across the line, letting the heavy weight of his ruin sink into the space between us.

"Audrey, please!" Ryan sobbed, his voice cracking violently. "Mom is losing her mind; she’s locked herself in her bedroom and refuses to talk to anyone! You can't do this to us! We’re husband and wife! Whatever you want—money, the house, a divorce settlement on your terms—just call off your lawyers! Call off the feds!"

"My lawyers didn't initiate this, Ryan," I said, my voice ice-cold and steady. "The federal crimes task force initiated this because you and your mother committed wire fraud and grand larceny."

"It was a mistake!" Ryan yelled, the desperation briefly flashing back into anger before collapsing into a pathetic whimper. "Mom told me we had to borrow the funds to save the commercial expansion! I didn't mean for it to go this far! Please, Audrey... come home. Let's fix this together. I love you."

I let out a dry, humorless laugh that sounded harsh even to my own ears. "You loved the corporate lines of credit I gave you access to, Ryan. You loved having a quiet wife who cleaned up your messes and looked the other way while your mother treated our home like a battlefield."

"That's not true—!"

"You didn't ask if I was okay when your mother shoved me down the stairs," I interrupted, every word sharp as a scalpel. "You didn't ask how I ended up in the emergency room with eight fractured ribs. You texted me a thumbs-up and told me to apologize to the woman who abused me."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the phone line. On the other end, all that could be heard was Ryan’s ragged, terrified breathing.

"Audrey..." he whispered, his voice trembling on the verge of breakdown. "Please."

"Goodbye, Ryan," I said softly.

I reached down and hit end call, then turned off the burner phone entirely, dropping it face down onto the table.

Agent Vance clicked off his digital recorder, looking at me with a mixture of professional respect and grim validation. "Well, Mrs. Mercer, that conversation officially establishes intent and consciousness of guilt. As for that private decryption key we discussed..."

I walked over to my desk, picked up a small encrypted flash drive resting beside my laptop, and handed it directly to the federal agent.

"Everything you need to unlock the offshore accounts is right here," I said evenly. "Including the secondary routing trail linking Linda’s personal shell company directly to Ryan’s personal retirement fund."

Vance took the drive, his expression turning triumphant. "Thank you, Mrs. Mercer. This changes everything. Expect federal marshals to execute the arrest warrants within the hour."
