Chapter 2 - The Terms of Engagement

At precisely nine o’clock, a sleek black sedan idled quietly at the curb outside my apartment building. Its tinted windows blended seamlessly against the gray morning asphalt, looking entirely out of place among the battered delivery trucks and faded sedan cars lining the street.

I had dressed carefully in the only blazer I owned—a navy blue piece I’d bought on clearance for job interviews—paired with pressed slacks. When I opened the lobby door, the rear door of the sedan clicked open automatically. A driver in a sharp suit nodded toward me.

“Ms. Hale? Please get in.”

The interior of the car smelled faintly of leather and cedar. As I slid across the plush seat, the door closed with a solid, muffled thud that cut off the noise of the city. We drove in silence for twenty minutes, gliding past the downtown high-rises until the architecture shifted toward historic brick buildings overlooking the river.

The car pulled up beside a private courtyard entrance tucked away from the main avenue. The driver escorted me past a wrought-iron gate and into a sunlit conservatory attached to a sprawling private townhouse.

Giovanni Fierro was standing by a marble table, reviewing a thick stack of physical documents. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, the faint scar along his jaw catching the morning light. When he heard our footsteps, he looked up.

“You’re punctual,” he observed, dismissing the driver with a subtle flick of his hand.

“I don't like wasting time,” I replied, keeping my voice firmer than I felt. “And I prefer knowing why I’m here. Your text didn't leave much room for negotiation.”

Giovanni set the papers down and crossed his arms. “Negotiation implies you don't have a choice. You do. But given what happened last night, I assumed you’d want answers just as much as I do.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Last night was a spectacle you engineered to get away from your aunt’s matchmaking candidate. Why drag me into it?”

“Because your ex-husband was publicly attempting to destroy whatever dignity you had left, and my presence was the only thing capable of shutting him up permanently,” Giovanni said smoothly, his dark eyes fixed on mine. “It was mutually beneficial. You stopped looking like a victim, and my family’s intended bride realized I have entirely different tastes.”

“And today?” I asked, refusing to let his casual arrogance intimidate me. “What do you want today, Mr. Fierro?”

He walked over to the table and picked up a single sheet of paper, sliding it across the polished marble toward me. “I want to talk about Tyler Vance.”

My breath hitched. I glanced down at the paper. It was a corporate personnel record, complete with a company letterhead from a mid-sized logistics firm where Tyler worked as a regional operations manager.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Tyler has been quietly embezzling funds from his employer’s regional expansion account for the past eight months,” Giovanni said matter-of-factly, as if reading a weather report. “He’s overextended himself trying to maintain a lifestyle that matches Vanessa’s family expectations. The house in the suburbs, the country club membership, the high-end nursery—none of it is being funded by his salary.”

The room seemed to tilt slightly. I remembered Vanessa’s panicked texts from the night before, warning me not to let Giovanni hurt Tyler. She hadn't just been worried about a physical altercation; she had known that Tyler’s house of cards was built on a foundation of sand.

“Why are you telling me this?” I whispered.

“Because yesterday at the wedding, when I stood beside you, your ex-husband’s expression wasn't just shock—it was absolute terror,” Giovanni said, leaning slightly against the edge of the table. “He thought I was investigating him. He thought you had finally found someone with the resources to look into his finances and uncover what he’s been hiding.”

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the room.

“And according to my preliminary look into your records, Tyler hasn't paid a dime of court-mandated child support in over three years. He claimed bankruptcy protection that was quietly rubber-stamped through a corrupt local firm.” Giovanni’s gaze sharpened. “A man who is hiding a felony financial crime doesn't just walk away from a family unless he has a very compelling reason to erase his past completely.”

I stared at him, the pieces of a puzzle I hadn't even known I was playing suddenly crashing together. The hurried abandonment five years ago. The strange, defensive hostility whenever I asked for basic medical authorizations for Lily. The sudden, desperate texts from Vanessa.

“He didn't just walk away because he didn't want to be a father,” I murmured, the realization dawning cold and heavy in my chest. “He walked away because he was already building a lie.”

May you like

“Precisely,” Giovanni said quietly. “And now that we’ve crossed paths publicly, Tyler thinks you’ve declared war. The question is, Jessica… what are you going to do about it?”
