Chapter 5 - The Fractured Mirror

The rain started just as I stepped out of Evelyn’s office building, turning the concrete sidewalks slick and reflective under the gray afternoon sky. I didn't care about the water soaking through the shoulders of my blazer. Vanessa’s final warning echoed in my ears like a persistent alarm bell: There’s something else. Something he found out about Lily before he left.
I didn't go home. I directed the cab straight to Tyler and Vanessa’s suburban house—the sprawling, manicured property that had been funded by stolen corporate funds and deceit.
When the cab dropped me off at the curb, the driveway was empty except for Tyler’s luxury SUV, its rear hatch propped open. Through the open garage door, I could see Tyler frantically tossing cardboard boxes and a heavy duffel bag into the trunk. He looked disheveled, his tie loosened, his shirt collar stained with sweat despite the cool rain.
I walked up the paved driveway, my footsteps crunching softly on the wet gravel.
Tyler turned around as I approached, freezing with a plastic storage bin half-lifted in his hands. His face drained of color, his eyes wide and bloodshot.
“Jessica,” he breathed, dropping the bin with a dull thud. “What are you doing here?”
“Packing for a trip, Tyler?” I asked, keeping my voice terrifyingly calm as I stopped ten feet away from him. “Or are you running away again before the auditors arrive?”
He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. He looked around the quiet suburban street as if expecting a SWAT team to descend from the clouds.
“You’re playing a very dangerous game,” Tyler said, his voice cracking as he tried to summon his old arrogance. “You think because you hooked up with some billionaire playboy like Giovanni Fierro that you’re untouchable? You don't know what world you’re stepping into.”
“No, Tyler, I think you don't know what world you’re stepping into,” I replied, stepping closer. “You embezzled from your company. You hid assets to dodge child support. And now you’re panicking because your house of cards is collapsing.”
Tyler let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, running a hand through his thinning hair. “Money? You think I care about the corporate account? That’s chump change compared to what’s actually coming.”
He pointed a shaking finger directly at my chest.
“You want to know why I left five years ago, Jessica? You think it was because I was scared of being a dad? I ran paternity tests three different times because something didn't add up. And the hospital records from Lily’s birth weren't just delayed—they were altered.”
The rain seemed to stop. The world around us dissolved into absolute silence.
“What are you talking about?” I whispered, the words caught in my throat.
“I didn't abandon you because of money,” Tyler said, his eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying, unhinged clarity. “I left because when the legal paternity results finally came back through the hospital system six months after she was born, the DNA didn't match mine. And it didn't match any known relative on my side.”

He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a yellowed, folded envelope, and threw it onto the trunk of the car between us.
“Check the file, Jessica. You weren't the only one being lied to.”
