Chapter 6 - The Phantom Beneficiary

The screen of my burner phone illuminated the dim hospital room with a cold, blue glow, the words burning themselves into my retinas: Your estate lawyer, Julian Vance, just tried to modify a second trust account overseas. And he didn't do it for you.
My heart skipped a beat, the phantom pain in my ribs suddenly flaring as adrenaline flooded my bloodstream.
Julian.
For five years, Julian Vance had been the legal architect of my empire, the man who drafted my corporate contracts, shielded my assets from aggressive competitors, and advised me on every major financial maneuver after I sold my medical software company. He was the one person I had trusted implicitly.
I sat up straight, ignoring the sharp protest of my healing muscles, and hit reply on the encrypted number.
Who is this? I typed rapidly with my right thumb.
Within three seconds, a reply flashed back: A friend who knows how much Julian loves offshore tax havens. Check your Cayman Holdings portal right now. Look at the secondary signatory added forty-eight hours ago.
My hands trembled as I unlocked my primary device, navigated through the dual-authentication security vault, and pulled up my international corporate portfolio managed by Harding-Vance Global. I bypassed the domestic accounts and tapped straight into the Cayman Island sub-trust—the hidden fund containing twenty million dollars earmarked for my philanthropic foundation.
I scrolled down to the authorization logs.
There it was. A secondary administrative signatory added at 4:15 PM yesterday—just hours before my car accident.
The name wasn't Julian Vance.
It was Marcus Vance. Julian’s estranged younger brother, a convicted white-collar felon who had supposedly lost his license to practice law in New York five years ago.
And right beneath Marcus's name was Julian’s master cryptographic seal authorizing the transfer of full executive control.
My breath hitched. The car accident yesterday wasn't just a random red-light runner. My mind raced back to the sequence of events: the sudden brake failure, the way the truck seemed to accelerate right into my driver’s side door, and how Julian had conveniently arrived at my hospital bed tonight with an eager pen and a pre-printed restructuring agreement that stripped my family dry while leaving the international trust completely untouched in his hands.

Before I could process the terrifying depth of the betrayal, my hospital room door clicked open.
