Chapter 4 - The Corporate Execution

Howard snatched the portfolio from my hand, his manicured fingers trembling so violently he nearly dropped it. He flipped open the brass clasp, his eyes scanning the first page under the harsh chandelier light.
His breath hitched. The paper in his hands fluttered uncontrollably.
"This... this is the master debt restructuring agreement," Howard whispered, his face turning the color of stale ash. "Apex Capital... they bought out our commercial loans two weeks ago... they called the entire debt due immediately..."
"Surprise," I smiled sweetly. "Apex Capital isn't just an institutional investor. It’s the private holding firm I founded before I even met Terrence. I didn't marry your son for his money, Howard. I married him because I loved him. But you assumed my silence meant weakness."
Chloe finally lost her composure, dropping her phone with a loud clatter onto the marble floor, where the glass screen shattered into a spiderweb of cracks.
"Dad, what is she saying?!" Chloe shrieked, grabbing her father’s tuxedo sleeve. "Tell her she's lying! Tell everyone she's lying!"
Howard didn't answer. He couldn't. He slowly lowered the portfolio, his knees buckling slightly as the full, devastating reality of his financial ruin settled over him. Every asset, every real estate holding, every luxury car, and the very ballroom we were standing in belonged to the woman they had thrown out into the rain six months ago.
Eleanor rushed forward, her face twisted in absolute horror as she looked between her pale husband and me. "Howard! Do something! Call the police! Have her arrested for forgery!"
"The police won't help you, Eleanor," a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the entrance of the ballroom.
We all turned. Striding down the center aisle came Julian Vance, senior partner of Harding & Vance, accompanied by two federal marshals in crisp dark suits.
Julian stopped beside me, opening his own leather briefcase and pulling out an official notice of receivership.

"Good evening, Mr. Vanderbilt," Julian announced smoothly, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the room. "By order of the federal bankruptcy court and the majority equity holder, Audrey Vanderbilt, all corporate assets of Vanguard Holdings are hereby frozen, effective immediately."
